Thanks for that Elizabeth, I think it gives a much better picture of Buckeye than I did!

I want to be sure that nobody thought I was disparaging the conference in any way. Folks put a lot of hard work into it and it's a great event.

It's just that you won't (normally?) get the kind of schedule you are used to, where seminar X will be on Y date at Z time. I'm kind of anal schedule wise so I like that sort of thing. Plus I had to work this around my 'real' job when I was in Columbus so I really needed that. The info was available once I got to the conference though.

Yep,and I forgot the jazz content, that was good too.

Also I hope my use of 'old timey' wasn't perceived to be in a negative context - I love old-timey harp!

I enjoyed working with Filisko, Gordon and the others there, and meeting them! Someday I'm going to "Go Down to Florida" like Muddy and meet that Smo-Joe guy. Actually I'll be in Jacksonville in a few weeks.

Dan - wow sorry to hear that Blues Station closed. I loved that place! In fact, I played my first ever jam there, seeing as how nobody else knew me I tried that before my local jam. When they called me, and I went up to set up, the bass player in the house band was saying "I never say you here before harp guy. you must be some out of town badass killer harp player, come on fess up." I couldn't convince him that I was new, but I had talked to the lead singer/guitar before I signed up to warn him, and ask if he could keep it simple for me (2nd position, standards). So what does he go right into? A hundred mile an hour version of Howlin' Wolf "Who's Been Talking", of course in a minor key with non-standard changes. "Hello new guy, have some of this". I was pissed. And man did I ever suck. After the set nobody spoke to me as I packed up my stuff, and went straight out the door head down in embarrassment. On the way over the river, I really almost threw the whole bag right in, m!
omentar
ily considering including myself along with the package for completeness. Now I'm glad I didn't. So to get to the point, I always wanted to go back there and have a chance to make up for that. Bummer!

Bruce:

Contact Jack Ely: _jel...@yahoo.com_ (mailto:jely...@yahoo.com) for more
details if you need them. Jack runs the show at Buckeye. I believe they
really do prefer/encourage pre-registration.

Most of us returnees got cards in the mail. The full package is $120 for
the three days or $35 for the Thursday, $35 for Friday and $65 for Saturday
including the banquet. If you plan to stay at the Hotel...the room rate is
$92.00 + tax at the University Plaza Hotel (3110 Olentangy River Road, Columbus,
Ohio 43202).(614-267-7461). Since most of the goings-on go on till the wee
hours (sort of a SPAH just in smaller form...you might want to stay at the
Hotel.

There are some details about the players: Carolbeth True and the BHF Jazz
Combo will be there again (the Jazz night was Stellar last year)...

Harmonica Junction
The Kromatics
Sandy G
The Hot Shots
Jimi Lee; and
The HARPbeats are all scheduled so far

There will be seminars (not announced as of yet - Jack can probably give you
more details..they simply might not yet be finalized)..

.Jamming, Open Stage, Harp Depot (store) Late Night Jams, Professional
Concerts, Thursday Night Blues Review and the aforementioned Friday Night Jazz
Cabaret.

I'm sure you'll have a good time if you attend...this will be my 4th
Buckeye. Hope to see you and your wife there.

I've only been playing harmonica for a year or so but my wife and I
attended the SPAH convention in Milwaukee last summer and had a great
time. Since we are going to be in the Columbus area around the time
of the Buckeye, we thought we'd attend that one, too. I have been
regularly checking the Buckeye web site http://www.buckeyeharmonica.org/
and the only 2008 information seems to be the festival dates. There
is no posted schedule of seminars and such for 2008 and no ticket
information. Is this normal for this event? Is pre-registration
required/encouraged like SPAH or is walk-in registration common for
Buckeye?

Thanks,
Bruce

"Is this normal for this event?"

It's very normal for that event, and has frustrated me in the past (and
others). They just aren't very big on putting stuff on their website,
for whatever reason. Not everyone has those skills. But it is a good
little conference. Nothing on the scale of SPAH, and very chromatic and
old-timey based, not a lot of blues action there when I went a few years
ago, but you can significantly improve any technique with the excellent
pros that show up there to teach (when I was there Filisko and many
other greats were teaching).

For a while I was going to Columbus a lot for work, and there was a
great blues bar there near the hockey arena where the Blue Jackets play,
forget the name, if it's still open. They had a great blues jam led by a
house band and had in all the national acts.
