Hello Harp-L'ers,

I've been listening a lot to Sonny Terry and people that can do
Sonny Terry's style really well. One of them is this player from Germany,
Adam Sikora. Adam does a version of "Callin' My Mama" on YouTube that is
really outstanding.

He does this thing where he makes the two draw hole sound like "doink doink
doink" (forgive me, that's about the best I could approximate it in
typing). The effect is really pronounced and I think it's pretty amazing.
He seems to be able to do this without using his hands.

Would any of you know how to make this sound? For the life of me I can't
seem to get it and it's driving me crazy. I've heard Paul Lamb do this as
well on another YouTube video, and he called it "popping the reed." I just
can't seem to get anything close to the articulation of that sound.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me :)

Bill

I saw that video of Adam Sikora's several years ago... he is an awesome
harp player !

here is the link... I think you are referring to the part at about 1:32,
where he is playing the 2 draw by using his tongue and getting a "staccato"
type effect and using his hand to assist in the effect... is that the part
?

Yeah, I love that "doink" too (though I think it sounds more like a
"quack"). Lots of Pre-War and Old-Timey players use it to good effect.

I think what Ken means by "using his tongue" is that no breath is
required to make the harp "quack like a duck." Just a rapid withdrawal
of the tongue from the front to the back of the mouth. Sort of like a
piston action. And then well-timed hand effects can accentuate the
effect, Sonny Terry-style.

Works for me.

Michelle
