Looking at a popular online harp shop just now, I noticed they sell the Audix FireBall for $199.95, but they charge $129.95 for the Audix Fireball - V (with volume control).

Why would the mic with fewer features cost so much more?

Hi. I think this question came up a while ago. I remember that it has
to do with the way the shell is manufactured. I have the original and
the bass response was different. I sent it back and they modified the
bass response for $30.

After my earlier post, I sent an inquiry directly to the folks at Audix. They just wrote back with this:

"The original Fireball is machined (CNC) here at Audix from aluminum and every finish is a unique two coat red and black anodize finish. The sound is a little more 'studio' like than the FireBall V.

"The Fireball V is a cast part and a stock black finish and is slightly longer than the FireBall. They are made in much higher numbers that enable us to sell them at a lower price. The V has a little more bass added for live playing."

The cheap version has a cast shell. The more expensive version is
machined. fjm

I strongly recommend any Fireball, original or otherwise, with the V element in it. I own an original Fireball with the element replaced with a V element, and it is an amazingly versatile harp mic for acoustic and amped work, live or studio.

The original Fireball element sounds nowhere near as good. That stuff about bass added "for live playing" is just simple nonsense. The added bass makes the mic sound a hell of a lot better for any purpose. Period.

In short: Fireball V good. Very, very good. Buy Fireball V.

I agree with Richard Hunter's remarks about the Audix Fireball V, the
one with the volume knob. I've had mine for about a year, and it is a
terrific harmonica mic, for both live work and recording. It also seems
to be a decent vocal mic. The volume control is unobtrusive, works well,
and is very nice to have.

I have been using a firebal-v for a while and like others very happy with this mic, a great mic for playing harp on many styles and good for vocals (I sing just backup since I think my voice is probably close to peewee herman )
