Eclectic program scores for symphony
By Glenn Pillsbury
Special to the Record
September 13, 2008
STOCKTON - Featuring a relatively eclectic mixture of music, the
Stockton Symphony opened its 82nd season Thursday at Atherton
Auditorium with a solid and well-received performance. The program,
led by Peter Jaffe, will be repeated tonight.
In its Stockton premiere, Villa-Lobos' Harmonica Concerto from 1956
revealed itself to be unexpectedly restless.
Soloist Robert Bonfiglio carried the work with musical skill and
engaging stage presence. Though dressed in a surprisingly
conservative tux and tails, he nevertheless exudes the music of this
concerto with every ounce of his being.
Bonfiglio's most successful moments were those that called for the
greatest control, whether pushing the chromatic harmonica to the
extremes of its pitch range or delicately guiding the ensemble
through the second movement's series of atmospheric cadences.
The third movement picks up the pace considerably and engages in a
jaunty dance before handing Bonfiglio an acrobatic cadenza that takes
the piece to its conclusion, though not before providing ample space
to show off the sonic possibilities of the instrument.
