This has been mentioned on the "L" a few times over the years - it's a great
way to discover new inspiration under our very noses - Bharat is one I
learned on the list recently.

In Detroit, there is Brian Miller, a Rod Piazza devotee. I heard Madison
Slim with Reverend Raven. Steve Guyger is "almost" well known. Keith Dunn, an
expatriot living in Holland is another.

Every region has their jewels. Harp-L is a good resource gathering place.

T.C. Carr out of Tampa gets my vote. An amazing blues player who can
do it all, and virtually unknown outside
of Florida.

I have shared the stage with Mikey Jr. and Nate Myers. Mikey Jr. is from NJ, Nate Myers could be from Harrisburg or Reading PA.

I am in Upper Bucks, PA (Riegelsville).

Here's a weird idea - if those "under the radar" are not on the "L", perhaps
those that list the "under the radar" could introduce them. Tell'em they're
being mentioned and there is curiosity about them.

What a great way to bring new inspiration/blood to this list?

~ James Conway for Celtic and other styles. An all around astounding player
from Chicago.

And...Not exactly _under_ the radar, but not mentioned enough as
extraordinary blues players:

~ Mitch Kashmar (check out the "Nickels and Dimes" CD) Great phrasing,
soulful and tone to the bone.

~ RJ Mischo - I caught RJ's presentation last night at Filisko's blues harp
class at the Old Town School in Chicago. I'd only known him by name before.
Now that I've heard him play harp and speak about his career I'd have to rank
him right up there with some of the best. He'll be at Buddy Guys Legends on
Wednesday night with a very hot pickup band. Highly recommended.

Oh really? I get over there alot. I have a good harp playing buddy (35
years) on Sunset Beach name Tedlee. Every time I go over there and we go
out partying in Tampa and he takes us to some place with a band they invite
him up.

About a year ago, I brought another good friend of Tedlee's (and mine from
way back in the early 70's) over there and me, Sky and Tedlee went to a
friend of his' gig. Well, the three of us can all play the living crap out
of the blues, and when Tedlee walked in the frontman of the group, I don't
even remember, called him up. Well, Tedlee sez, Here's my old friend Sky
and he plays bettr'n me, and that's my old friend Splash and he plays
bettr'n Sky! So they invited us all up there.

We all carry "A" harps. That's just normal cuz blues in E... anyway... we
tell the band blues in E and the three of us rotated the blues licks, and
then did a call and answer, and then started doing single note harmonies...
the three of us doing a three-part harmony. We tore it up. The place
went crazy!

We never practiced together, and Tedlee had not seen Sky for more than 20
years till that day.

That was an improv I'll never forget. a night to remember! Only I have a
hard time remembering the late nite part because everyone was buying us
drinks after that and we had to take a cab back to Tedlee's.

The next day we were talking about it and said, "Do you think we could do
that again,?" And none of us could remember exactly what we actually played.

Truly, Once-In-A-Lifetime thing.

So next time I go over there, I'm gonna have to check out this TC Carr.
Where does he play?

Well Nate is from my area, near Harrisburg, PA. www.natemyers.com You
can find any of these cats prolly by just using google and hitting up
their web sites, myspace, etc. Nate hosts a great Harpalooza benefit
each year. Here is the link for this years:
http://www.myspace.com/harpapalooza and I think Mikey Jr. is playing
this year. If you want a few hours of good harmonica blues, jump blues,
etc by some great cats like Nate and our own JAMES DAY then just check
out the recording of last year's harpalooza on archive.org -
http://www.archive.org/details/NMA2007-05-11_HarpapaloozaIII

See you there this year?

I'll contribute, just to stick up for a few folks that I consider to
belong in this category (I cringe every time someone starts a 'list'
thread - i.e. best harp/tuba duos - solely because I know for a fact
that we've lost some great contributors to this list just because of the
sheer volume of posts and perceived negative change in the signal to
noise ratio that these thread contribute to...)

Dane Paul Russell - York PA (plays with Bobby Parker, great all around
funk/rock/blues player)
Mike Easton Camp Hill PA - Chicago blues, but now moving more to
chromatic and other styles (jazz, world, etc) and a world-renowned harp
tech
Pete Sheridan Mechanicsburg PA - author of the great book on vintage
harp gear and getting 'that' sound, plays up in State College most
Friday evenings

Note there's something more, significant there from each of them other
than just being more than "really good players".

formerly from Youngstown, Ohio,
now living in South Florida.

Pix has been an amazing player in many styles
of playing ever since I met him some 30 years
ago.

In Cincinnati, we have a bunch of great "under the radar" harp players:

- Larry Bloomfield (Silky smooth 3rd position, great tone)
- Dave Gilligan (no one better in town for Celtic / Bluegrass)
- Rick Howell (classic Chicago chops)
- Brad Hatfield (Fast, Articulate, also great tone, best vintage harp amp
collection in town)

Forgive me if I forgot anyone.

My vote is Charlie Sayles from Washington DC. Charlie doesn't work out in clubs that much, but he works hard at his playing everyday. He's a fantatsic player, a good friend, and has a heart of gold.

Previous mention was made of Nate Myers from Harrisburg, PA. Another great player and fantastic guy.

I have to mention my good buddy Travis Fouch from WV.
He is a hellacious country and blues harp player. In
my opinion, the best weekend warrior in the area
(WV,DC,VA,MD,PA). At least by far the best I've
heard. And he can hang with the pros too. Just ask
Mikey Jr. Travis tore it up busking at the Helena
Blues Fest with Terry Harmonica Bean. The dude is a
natural. He's only been playing for about 6 years.
He's got a wife, kids, and a day job, but I'm sure
we'll be hearing more from him in a few years. Anyway
enough kissing his ass. . .
