Well the discussion died down again, but one reply (don't remember who
it was from) stuck with me - someone said they tried taping off the
entire back of the harp, AND the front, and could no longer get any
sound - and (if I interpreted it correctly) concluded that this
"sealing the front of the harp" stuff must not be legitimate. Well,
it is true - as you develop your technique, you can get such a tight
seal that no air will flow. Then you get no sound - and shortly before
that the reeds will often go off pitch. But the ability to completely
block the air flow like that IS the goal. Once you can do that, you
know you have mastered this technique. If you can't, you're not there
yet. But getting very close to the complete containment of airflow
through the harp is my definition of fully cupped. I did a YouTube on
this a while back, but I just re-did it for no good reason and I think
the new video demonstrates this better.

how many of you guys still have one and still use them ?

I'm thinking of buying, and was just curious, if its something you still use.

Here's a link to a Richard Sleigh comment on tuners:

http://harp-l.org/pipermail/harp-l/2009-January/msg00049.html

I have a Korg C-40 ... under $30 ...

Metronome a good idea for practice as helps to build timing ...
especially when learning ... and if you find maintaining rhythm by
foot tapping difficult ...

I have a Korg MA-30 ... was $25 ... can use with speaker or earphone
... has a tap button function so can tap to the beat of a tune and get
bpm ... then can practice runs at the same tempo or to build up speed
for playing at faster tempos ...

Both were recommended over various others at music store ...

The tuner is for adjusting the harps more or less.. I've been told to get a chromatic tuner to do the job.
I like the fact that this is an all in one box.
Question:
Would this be a good turner for working on the diatonic harps...

abner (Yeah, Blueyes, I know.)

Same question as before.
I like the one that's has the tuner and Metronome.
I need the metronome to learn to keep a beat.
and
I would like the turner to make sure I'm in the right key and also if I need to retune my reads.. I blew out 1 reed (#3) drew and have trying slowly to bring it back to life...
I was told to use a Chromatic tuner for this

So my question is.
The all in one Korg, is this a Chromatic tuner or does it matter...

abner ( Blueyes, again)

If you want to re-tune harmonica reeds, a chromatic tuner is a necessary tool.

When selecting one, pay attention to the "detection" or "tuning" range.

When you start retuning the high end reeds, like on a key of D harp,
you need the higher detection range. I have this problem with my Boss TU-12H tuner. The high end reeds, like the 9 draw on a D harp will not register.

I did a quick lookup of some tuners...

Boss TU-12H range is C0 to B6.
Korg TM-40 range is C1 to C5.
Korg CA-30 range is C1 to C8.
Korg CA-40 range is A0 to C8 (range for a standard 88 key piano).
ST-122 Turbo Tuner range is C0 to C8 (and you can tune in ANY temperament)
Peterson V-SAM tuner range is C0 to B8 (has a wide range of temperaments listed (any?)

Also check reference tones, and Calibration (I believe 440-443 are most most common for harmonica, but a wider range is better)
Tuning to different temperaments other than equal, will require being able to read +/- cents, or having built in temperaments, like the ST-122 and Peterson strobe tuners.

I haven't decided on what tuner to get to replace my Boss TU-12H, but I kind of like the ST-122 Turbo Tuner (costs $130), but the Korg CA-40 is cheap and has a great frequency range.

Not sure about the metronome thing, but there's a wide variety of those available too at reasonable prices... you might want a separate device from the tuner.

Both the CA-30 and CA-40 are labelled Chromatic Tuner on their
instruction sheets and on the front of the tuner. Though the TM-40
tuner/metronome isn't labelled Chromatic tuner on the instruction
sheet or instrument, the tuner component has virtually identical specs
and tunes "12-note equal temperament".

I would have got the TM-40 but it wasn't carried by my local store.

Check out YouTube for vids on how to use tuners, as well as various
models of each. Product reviews and recommendations.

I use my chromatic tuner all of the time..
But mostly to ensure the guitarist and the bass player are in tune with my
harmonica!
I attended a recording session MANY years ago, with a band that featured a
pedal steel guitar...
Electronic tuners were not available back then...
Sadly the band "tuned" to the "out of tune" steel guitar...
It was about half a semitone flat... I simply could not play along with
them...
Thank Heaven for electronic tuners!
Kind regards
