I want out from under the costs of running harp-l.  I have a person who has offered help in achieving this goal.  My expectation is that the discussion will result in a solution to that one problem.  If it doesn't it will at the very least bring some clarity to the reality of the situation.

I'm not turning harp-l into a Face Book group.  What happens when I am no longer in control of harp-l is somebody else's decision.

Our server costs are paid monthly.  The domains are renewed in 2 year increments.  The domains expire some time in January of 2013.  My commitment to pay for harp-l's monthly costs expires in February of 2013.  That'd be the end of January 2013.  That's as long as I'm willing to fund this however costs are split and the co-owner would likely pay the monthly costs after February.  The domains have always been owned by me.  So there's your outside absolute drop dead date.  Mid January 2013.  I personally will not pay to renew those domains.

So sounds like it's mostly sorted then. Or are you still looking for
someone to take over moderation duties? Out of curiosity, what are your
monthly hosting costs? I'm guessing domain registration is about
$10-$15 per yr (at least that would be typical). Feel free to email me
directly if you like. Or not, whatever, I was just wondering.

I use proxy registration so it's a little more than that.  I think it's posted in an earlier thread.  Maybe $25 a year per domain but if anything that's a high figure.  Hosting is right at $25 because we're on a vps and have root access.  We tried the cheaper option and couldn't find a box that had everything we needed already installed.   My high estimate on costs is $350 a year.  It adds up over a decade.

I'll follow up later about the listowner aspect of it.  I know what I want but I'm not sure I can get it but I also haven't clearly asked for it.  It turns out none of you guys are particularly good at reading my mind or guessing.

I certainly will contribute or pay all of the cost if it's needed.  Is it paid on a monthly basis or can you pay it all in one payment?  The money thing has got to be the least of our troubles, I figure, because it is a clearly defined issue... someone has to pay it.  So consider that problem solved.  I could definitely come up with $700 by January if need be.  Not that I am made of money, but if it'll just make things simpler I'll pay the cost.

regarding the facebook thing, as you said there is no barrier to anyone forming a facebook group and posting about its creation on Harp-L.  That would be a totally separate thing and I think most of us here on the meta list are interested in preserving Harp-L as it exists presently with a Mailman account.  But to any of you who are hardcore facbook-ers, have at it, we'll be glad to help you publicize it.  Our focus here should be on preserving the structure of Harp-L, not starting something new.

as for the listowner stuff, we like the way the list runs right now, and so we are eager to hear more from you about it.  I just want to make sure that the discussion continues and doesn't stagnate like it did before (I would guess that happened because it seemed like the deadline was so far away).  I just don't want to lose our sense of urgency now that we know the ultimate deadline is January instead of October, because we seem to be coming together and trying to find solutions.

Bill and Seth, thanks for the offers of support regarding funding.
I'm not interested in any one person paying it all. I'd like to see
70 people give $5 max. My goal is for their to be no expectation that
it costs money to belong to harp-l. I'm pretty sure I have an able
partner and I will pursue that avenue for now.
