Besides the petition, I feel the right way to respond to this would be to make feb 23rd drive in haralur village a resounding success. Lalitha, can you publish meeting point and time on 23rd. Please pass on the word and any political party who wants to show support / regret can do so with their presence and on the ground work with us.
Lets collectively make bellundar a model clean ward.

Malini
Please send your names to Shilpi so she can add it to the note she wrote and she can forward it to the relevant authorities and ask for a new clean up drive on this road. And let us continue to try to get other roads in our area cleaned as well.We should all take a firm stand on the thwarting a citizen initiative done in the public interest with the approval of the BBMP but we do not want to politicise the issue by involving the MLA because the MLA has no direct jurisdiction over this issue. And there are instances when the MLA too has stood in the way of good work in the past.In response to the question of why the corporator would do this I can only relate the incidents as they happened.Work started at 7.30 on the ORR intersection with an initial set of 20 or so workers and supervisors. We had more than 15 volunteers overseeing the work. We had arranged for similar sets of 15 volunteers for every 200 metre stretch of road. Other BBMP officers and more workers and supervisors along with JCBs and tractors arrived shortly after and we were all pleased at how much we got cleaned in the first 100-metre stretch of the road upto Trinity Woods and Acres. Some of the BBMP officials told us at this point that the corporator had called them as he had wanted some cleaning done on another road. When they came back an hour later one BBMP office was in tears and another was visibly shaken. They refused to tell us what happened but they apologised profusely and told us they have to move the labourers and equipment to another road. We asked them the reason and they refused to discuss it. We called the Corporator but he didn't take our calls. We called a higher up in the BBMP who was not present but who has been very proactive with this drive and he too couldn't explain things to us but he said he would tell his staff to leave a couple of tractors, a JCB and some labourers with us but everythig and everyone else would have to take care of the road the corporator had asked to be cleaned. Soon the two tractors also was forced to leave so we were left with just one JCB with which 5 volunteers continued to get work of levelling done till about 2 PM. We thank the JCB driver who was excellent and very helpful.
We later found out (through people who want to remain anonymous) that the corporator, when he had come to know of the efforts to clean Sarjapur Road, had asked for another road( people referred to it as the gear road leading to Adarsh Palm Retreat) to be cleaned and the BBMP had obliged by sending a team there too in the morning. But that didn't seem to be enough...he made them take all the equipment and labourers away from Sarjapur Road to this road. We were told that he had had some well wishers on the said road and that he said something like people on Sarjapur Road do not vote so why bother with them. We cannot verify whether he actually said any of these things because none of us were there but we were not given any other explanation of why everything was moved.
Best,

Really appreciate the efforts.. Sad to know of the way it ended.. Hope the corporator gets enough bad press and thrown out of the public service for good.. We are planning to send the following letter to higher officials apprising them of the situation today. If you agree with us and want you name to be included, please respond to me with name of your RWA you are part of. We also hope that in a future drive of similar nature, we will have more support from the local residents. We thank all the volunteers who showed up today. As you drive towards outer ring road, past Trinity woods and acres, you can see cleaned drains on your left and lot of trash and weeds which was removed. Unfortunately most of it is still piled up on the road, as BBMP workers were pulled out by the corporator. We do hope that it is cleaned up in the next few days but we are not hopeful.Dear all,As you all know, we had planned this cleaning drive for today. The work started as planned but did not end as planned. It was unceremoniously interrupted by threatening phone calls made to the BBMP workers from our corporator Babu Reddy. Despite a clean go ahead from BBMP, we could not get all the work done as all the equipment and workers were pulled out by our very own elected representative - the corporator.
Also, Attached are a few pictures from the cleaning drive this morning.
Thanks

Dear Sir,,
This is to bring to your notice an instance of shameful conduct of Ward 150 corporator Mr.Babu Reddy.
On 15th February 2014, a Saturday morning, Resident volunteers of Bellandur ward had planned a cleaning drive (to clean-up badly cluttered areas) on Sarjapur Road in collaboration with BBMP. The stretch to be cleaned was around 1.4 km long, starting from Outer ring road- Sarjapur junction to Purva Sunshine Apartments. The cleaning drive would target hoarding removal, garbage clearance, drain cleaning, median and road sweeping and leveling uneven stretches on the entire stretch of the road. This drive was supported by BBMP which promised to bring in 1 JCB, 7 tractors and 140 workers for manual labor for half a day. Many RWA members in this area volunteered to coordinate the drive and worked with the concerned BBMP officials for days to ensure smooth execution of the clean-up drive.
On the clean-up day, nearly 30 laborers, 3 tractors and around 20 volunteers showed up at 8am. With JCB arriving shortly afterwards, leveling and drain cleaning work started in front of Mantri Flora apartments. But within a couple of hours, the BBMP staff were threatened by the Corporator Babu Reddy and ordered to stall the work immediately. Within a span of half an hour, all tractors and workers were withdrawn and sent to some other site that the corporator wanted them to come. The JCB was the only equipment left till 2pm. A few of the residents managed to get some leveling work done with the help of JCB. However due to the absence of tractors and BBMP helping hands, all the debris still lies on
the road, obstructing traffic and causing inconvenience to the commuters. It has been apparent to citizens that our corporator has not actively engaged with citizens in making the wards clean, but now he is even opposing citizens’ efforts to keep our wards clean.
We request you to take serious note of this situation – An elected representative blatantly and shamelessly, working against the good of the very people who elected him to power. Time and effort of hundreds of volunteers has gone down the drain today. Our faith in the governance is shaken and we will speak out with our ballots unless remedial action in the form of a more thorough clean up is initiated immediately.
Yours Sincerely.
Residents of the Ward 150.
15th February 2014.

In the subject linw of my mail I had previously mentioned that the Sarjapur Road clean up will be on 14th...it is actually 15th Feb, Saturday. The clean up for Haralur village is on the 21st but the SWM session for that village is on the 22nd. Sorry for the mistakes.

Once we get this stretch cleaned successfully, we will initiate a beautification campaign ( paint medians, plant shrubs, etc,.) in the coming weeks. We have also spoken to the BBMP to work with us to do similar cleaning drives once a month in other stretches of roads in our ward and for that we will need volunteers living on those stretches to step up and get in touch with us so we can explain what we need to survey and how we need to organise volunteers to make those drives successful. Please email Priya, Meera N, Meera K, Shilpi and Lalitha about volunteering(all are cc'd above). This cleanup will not be thorough if we do not have volunteers to help.Purva SunshineDivrashree ElanAmbience DivaSpringfieldsGolden Corner ApartmentsHi All. Some of us have been toying with the idea of doing a massive clean up drive on Sarjapur Road and we finally got the BBMP to sign up for an intensive cleaning event. On Saturday 15th Feb, the BBMP zonal office, will do an intensive cleaning of Sarjapur Road from ORR junction to Purva Sunshine. This inititive will involve cleaning the medians, levelling the ground on either side of the tarred road, removing all illegal hoardings/advertisements, removing debris/junk from the road side and cleaning of rain water drains. The BBMP will bring about 100 pourkarmikas( they will bring them from other wards as well because we don't have many in our ward), two JCBs and several tractors. Some of us will conduct a walk through of the stretch in the next few days and identify the problem spots and draw a map of the stretch and coordinate with the BBMP to make sure that they try to get all those areas cleaned. On this day there will be severe parking restrictions on this stretch so please keep an eye out for 'No Parking' signs.Coronet Apartments
We will need volunteers to supervise/help with the work and also to advice people where not to park. We would especially like each of the following apartments to send at least three volunteers each, especially since the stretch outside their apartments is going to be cleaned:
Mantri Flora
Trinity Woods and Acres
Villa Del Mar
As part of our ongoing interest in working to make things better in all parts of our ward (not just where big apartments and layouts are), we have also convinced the BBMP officials to do a clean up of Haralur village on the 21st. Volunteers from the village will join on those days and if anyone in this group would like to join in, please drop us a line. There will also be an awareness session on SWM and segregation in the village conducted by Lalitha, Malini and Mr Ramakanth of the Solid Waste Management Round Table.
Please flood our inboxes with promises of volunteering for both these events!Best,
Priya--
