Dear club secretaries,
I hope you enjoyed seeing the women's team qualifying for Tokyo 2020 and your members are looking forward to the rest of the season. Would have been great if the men got there as well.
I just wanted to make you aware of some of Hockey Ireland's development programmes that are available to clubs as well as to offer my assistance with any club issues you may have.
We would anticipate that there may be more demand for membership due to the women's success at all levels, which may put clubs under pressure to take on more members. If your club is unable to cope with demand, please drop me a line.
I am available to meet with clubs at any stage, whether it is to discuss club issues, deal with problems or to just answer any questions you might have. I can also help with club support, training of volunteers and anything else that might arise. See below
for some of the programmes we offer.
Coaching Support: Aside from our core coaching courses (Fundamentals, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3), which are run primarily during the summer months, we also have shorter 2-2.5 hour courses called Stepping Stones (
https://www.hockey.ie/steppingstonescourses),
which we can run in your club. Research shows that the quality of coaching has the biggest impact on both retention rates and enjoyment for the players. If you would like to discuss your coach training needs or book a course, please contact me.
Tricks 4 Sticks: This programme is designed to help increase your underage numbers and can target specific age groups and genders. Hockey Ireland fund a club coach (must be Level 1 qualified) to run a 4-6 week programme in local schools and the club
can then host a mini-blitz or an open day for the schools to encourage the kids to join the club.
Hockey Skills Challenge: The HSC is a series of 12 skill challenges for your underage players to test themselves on and gain a certificate. We have created obstacle courses and challenges along with 'how to coach' videos. You can sign up for this here:
https://www.hockey.ie/hockeyskillschallenge
Clubmark: Clubmark is a standards programme for clubs and focuses on ensuring clubs are running efficiently across three main areas - Club administration, Playing and volunteering opportunities; and creating a child friendly club. You can find more information
here:
https://www.hockey.ie/clubmark
If you require any further information or would like to discuss any issues your club has, please feel free to contact me by email or call me on the number below.
Please pass this on to any club members that may be interested (e.g. head of underage hockey).
Thanks.
Kind regards,
Phil Oakley
