Is there a searchable, user-friendly list of Template Fields used in CPRS templates? I'm trying to create a template in CPRS template editor (which I do pretty often in CPRS), but finding fields through the editor is painful. Perhaps there is a list on the web or in a user manual somewhere?

I'm a clinician so forgive my naiveté here.
All advo is appreciated!

Amy,

We love clinicians here!  I also am a clinician, and I have heard that it is easier to teach a clinician what they need to know about the computer system than it is to teach a computer technician what they need to know about clinical practice.  :-)

Regarding template fields, my experience has been that it is challenging to find a field that does exactly what you want, unless it is something simple like a sized edit box.  We typically just make our own fields.  Do you have permission to do that?  If not, then I think you just have to scroll down through the list and see what is available.

That's the advantage of being a Clinical Engineer, we know a lot about medical instrumentation, a little about clinical practices, and a little more about computers.  Put all that together and you get a great generalist.

to Hardhats,
There are searchable lists of fields for CPRS, available in the text-only portion of the VistA system.
These lists of fields may be customized on each VistA system.
For a complete list of the ones available on the system you use, you need to look in the FileMan file #8927.1 -- named the "TIU TEMPLATE FIELD FILE".  It is part of the TEXT INTEGRATION UTILITY Package and specifies what elements may be used when setting up a Document to ask of the end-user when creating a document. The data for this file is stored in the global variable ^TIU(8927.1) and there are several fields stored for each entry.

The WorldVistA EHR system has 932 entries. In other words, 932 different kinds of Template Fields that can be asked of the person who is answering questions after choosing a Progress Note title. The OSEHRA system has 224 entries.

Each VistA site has a differing number of entries (named ways to ask questions in the boilerplate of a Note Title), depending on how the Clinical Application Coordinators for that site have setup CPRS.

I am going to run a report on the different lists I can access and put it up on http://www.vistapedia.net so you can search them.

[KSB] Hey Kevin, it's not that hard for a geek to learn surgery. If you look at https://groups.google.com/d/msg/hardhats/nMcDFPLU1ns/sTsIx022Y4YJ you'll see how I did the first part of it well. I just never spent time mastering the second part. :-)

Hard to sew on frozen tissue, though. :-)

Honestly, creating your own is the easiest. You need to be really careful about editing existing ones, because that could effect existing templates. If you use a naming convention, like your own initials first, then you can find the ones you make for yourself. Also, if you look carefully, there is a bit of a naming convention used by the VA common template fields and if you understand that you can find them easily.
