Stop codes are used in a multitude of ways in VA, everywhere from
setting up encounter forms to reporting performance on certain
measures-particularly primary care. There is a core group of stop
codes, called NEXUS, which are particularly important. These codes
include primary care, cardiology, diabetes, some mental health
clinics, endocinology etc. Every VA participates in something called
the External Peer Review Process where some one comes in every quarter
and sample charts to see if certain things are done-like a diabetic
getting an annual HGA1C, or everyone getting tobacco use education, or
a depression screen etc. By using a stop code data from a number of
individual clinics can be treated as a single unit. Stop codes are
used in clinical reminder reports as way to collect data from dozens
or hundreds of clinics without having to list each one. Stop codes and
PCE are intertwined.
