I just received news that Professor Walters died last week Monday.
He was 90 years old and will be sorely missed.

Yes, indeed. I have a few copies of his book which have been a great help,
even to someone who is basically not a MUMPs programmer. He was a very sweet
man. I loved when he ran the online course, after he left full time teaching,
and he and I would work together to help a student. It was such a pleasure!

I am sorry to hear this. I always enjoyed my visits with him at times when I was in the vicinity of UC Davis. The M world has a permanent technical debt to him. He will be missed.

Felt kinship with him because we share the same initials.  Still reference his M book from time to time...

He was a supporter of the Hardhats from the beginning (www.hardhats.org/history/hardhats.html#I).  A true Renaissance man, as the obituary shows.  I think he had the distinction of being the only person to be both chairman of the MUMPS Users Group and the MUMPS Development Committee.  I always envied him his Gilbert-and-Sullivan prowess... and his untiring patience and capacity for hard work.

Sad news indeed, dear Ed! I wondered how he was: He did not answer emails any more. I attached a pdf-file in memoriam and hope that works.

Does anybody know whether Shipley Walters survived him and how she is? Does ist make sense to write her?

Dick Walters was tremendously helpful and supportive when we were setting up the MUMPS courses in CS&IS at East Texas State U (now Texas A&M at Commerce)!
