At the VistA Expo in Redmond this week, I am scheduled to conduct two workshops, an Introduction to MUMPS and an overview of GT.M Administration & Operations.  Both are very much hands-on, interactive sessions.  Please do bring laptops on which to run a virtual machine.

In order to get a sense of how many there will be, please e-mail me off-list if you plan to attend.  There is no commitment one way or another - mostly just for me to be mentally prepared.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Seattle.  These lists have been rather quiet about the VistA Expo.

Hi Bhaskar,

This is great.

We are also planning on doing hands-on exercises at
VistaExpo with VMs using the development tools and
testing infrastructure of OSEHRA.

Essentially the outcome of:
http://www.osehra.org/wiki/instructions-establishing-and-testing-osehra-code-base-main-page

I'm curious as to whether you are planning on using
VirtualBox to run the virtual machines.

I'm planning on bringing DVD's with VirtualBox installers
and the exported file of the Virtual Machine. We could do
a common software setup session, if you think that it may
be useful.

The VM is running GT.M in an Ubuntu 10 installation.

Regards,

Luis

I have an Ubuntu 11.10 disk image in vmdk format which pretty much any
virtualizer can handle, including Virtual Box and QEMU/kvm (which is what
I use on my Linux laptop). I wasn't planning on a VistA installation
session - my material is more basic material than that. In any case,
let's touch base on Thursday and see how best to leverage each other's work.

Bhaskar,

I will attend  this. If I bring Mac will that work or bring Windows box.

Although I personally have no experience with a Mac, Virtual Box (http://virtualbox.org) for OS X should run the Linux virtual machine I will provide.

Thanks, Baskar.  I hope to get smart in the current MUMPS environments while I'm up there.  I had this fantasy that I could simplify my life down to a single MacBook Air, but its looking like I should probably lug a PC laptop instead.  Given that we'll be in Redmond, I'll be sure to bow to the east, or wherever the gods of Microsoft live...  I'd appreciate any help folk can offer, helping me to set up my environment.  (P.S. I'll be bringing a Kindle Fire I'm getting this afternoon)

My PC dual boots to an older Ubuntu and Windows 7 home, plus I have a copy of Windows 7 Pro...  what would be the simplest way to configure all of this, so I have my own running system when I return?

Luis:  I look forward to meeting you... I did a system called LoadGen for CHCS years ago that did both regression and load testing, networking 16 386s together to stress test a VAX implementation.  It worked remarkably well, predicting site performance within 5%...

I'm a little rusty with all of this, so any help I can get to come home with a working system would be appreciated..

Tom --

Assuming that your MacBook has sufficient free hard disk space (say 5GB), it should suffice.  Install Virtual Box (http://virtualbox.org) or other proprietary virtualization software - I will provide a disk image in vmdk format with Ubuntu 11.10 installed.  In the Admin and Ops workshop, along the way we will install GT.M - and VistA from an export of routines and globals, if we don't run out of time (and if we, I will work afterwards with anyone who wants to install it).  You can also run a Windows 7 virtual machine on the same host (concurrently, if you have enough RAM).

Well Tom, I shall be there proving that you can indeed simplify your
life to a Macbook Air ...well OK I'll also have an iPad and iPhone :-)

...but when you have to trek all the way from the UK, lugging an Air
rather than a laptop makes a huge difference.

The trick, by the way, on the Macbook, is to have VMWare Fusion, so
you can also run Windows if needed and Linux VMS....and even OS X Lion
VMs these days which is really cool

Tom,

This is very interesting.
I will like to hear more about your experiences with regression
and load testing, and to explore how we can apply similar methods
to build a robust testing infrastructure. Such resource will greatly
facilitate the process of accepting code contributions from a larger
community of developers.

We will coordinate with Bhaskar to make sure that the VMs are
available as an easy resource to get started with the new code
environment. One of the VMs will have the current testing
configuration already setup ready to submit builds to the
Dashboard:
http://code.osehra.org/CDash/index.php?project=Open+Source+EHR

This is the same VM that is available here:
http://www.osehra.org/wiki/virtual-machine-testing-osehra-code-base-pre-configured
(note that a BitTorrent download is available as well)

We also plan to run an exercise on how to submit code
contributions to the code review system:
http://review.code.osehra.org/

I'm looking forward to meet you, and to talk more
about how we can work together to improve the
resources that have been deployed so far.

Regards,

Luis

Tom,

You don't need a PC laptop, especially is your Air has 4GB of RAM.  VirtualBox is free but Parallels is a bit nicer, particularly its Coherence/Crystal mode where Windows apps look just like any other Mac app.  Setup with either one is smooth enough.  And lugging that 2nd laptop will get old fast.

(Pre-virtualization, I used to cart 3 laptops around: OS X, Windows & Linux, but other members of the group threatened to string me up by my mouse cord because of the table space they took up.)

[Yes, yes, there is also VMware's Fusion but Parallels is still a bit nicer right now.  The two were leap-frogging each other for a while but VMware doesn't seem to put as much effort into Fusion as it used to.]

Bhaskar, will you do the same at the VistA-meeting in Davis CA? I just
booked my flights and hope to see you there.
