Hi Hardhats. I would like to know if somebody here using middleware to connect their lab analyzer to VistA?

If you are using any middleware, is it an open source?

Thank you and best regards

I expect that the tools available from Mirth would be very useful to you.
It is an opensource HL7 middleware system.

Thanks, David. Appreciate your reply. How can I go to Mirth? Do they have a web portal?
Do you know anyone there?

Thank you in advance

the page http://www.mirthproject.com
will redirect to
http://www.mirthcorp.com/community/overview

which should give you a good taste of what is available.
note that mirth outputs HL7, but it may or may not get HL7 as input.

Since very few lab analyzers use HL7, this may not be all that
useful. Most analyzers use either a proprietary interface format (a
surprising large number), or a variant of what used to be ASTM-1394
(high level) & ATSM-1381 (transport), now is something like LIS-3 from
a different standards org I can never remember.
My company provides this software for non-Vista lab systems (and our
own), but it is not open source. You can contact me off line if you
would like more information.

I agree that the link from the analyzer to Mirth is not HL7.
That is why I talked about the variety of input formats that Mirth handled.
Of course, I am not a day-to-day user of Mirth, so I might have believed
more of their advertising copy than was reasonable.

PS: there is definitely the ability to read Lab results in HL7 into VistA.
As I recall Data Innovations and Dawing both provide that to the VA.
More details at the Laboratory: Universal Interface page at:

Thank you for all your replies. I agree that not all of analyzer is currently using HL7 however if your LIS is VistA and its using HL7 message to transmit all orders to a Lab Instrument then the middleware software should convert this HL7 message to a natural language that the Lab instrument will analyzer and understand these orders.

Again, I appreciate for shedding some light on my query. I will take note of everything you guys have shared.

Regards
