Blood bank Bar Code should be ISBT128 code or CODABAR?

Hi all

I am working on blood bank configuration for Bar Code and gone through
the documents explaining ISBT & Codabar. Where as the Patch LR*5.2*267
is installed, which changes in Blood product file# -field- IS
ISBT128 is set to NO.(This is a codabar product type).

Still i am not understanding whether the Blood products needs to be
configured for ISBT 128 code or Codabar.

Please guide me for Bar Code Configuration of Blood Bank module with
your valuable experience on it.

There are a LOT of different BAR Code formats that are used in hospitals.
It will depend upon the barcode reader you have and the bar code formats
that you will be getting from other blood banks. I personnally would
recommend that you use a barcode reader that is an OR of the keyboard,
that is that the input to the next prompt can come from the keyboard or
the barcode reader. This will allow you to key in the code if your reader
cannot identify the type of code or the barcode is defaced.

I thank you for your valuable concern and also appreciate your
guidance & suggestions to the issue.

I found VistA blood bank document,only discussing about ISBT 128 &
Codabar.And it also given specification of Barcode printer & reader
for these type of bar code configuration.As i understood ISBT128 Bar
code configuration enable us to gather more information in bar coded
labels like Blood unit ID, Blood group, Expiry date & the source of
Blood etc, which is not there in Codabar. But my problem is to get the
confirmation from expert guiding me to go with any one of Bar code
configuration, which may be in use by some of blood banks.

Please guide me , which one is the best system of bar code to
configure in VistA, which can prevent the maximum possible manual/
clinical errors while handling blood units. I installed the Patch
LR*5.2*267 and the changes in Blood product file# -field- ISISBT128
is set to NO.(This is a codabar product type). Will you please tell me
the further configuration for the latest Bar Code System applicable in
VistA.

I am looking for the most recent Bar code system applicable in Vista
for which i will be able to get the Bar Code printer & Reader.
