I just finished reading this, and I am quite stunned by how banks
managed to re-invent Mumps by another name. Even the source code is
stored in a database!

The other major takeaway is that GNU/Linux development practices (at
least, that's where I think where version control and continuous
integration started), notably absent in VistA, are very absent in
banking as well.

The author also has other articles that look very interesting.

Hi Sam,
Have you ever looked at Smalltalk? It also has that code-is-data-is-code aspect and quite a few other similarities. It was created by Alan Kay while at Xerox Parc Labs, later, at Apple, he created the free Squeak Smalltalk that is written in itself. Its the original "object oriented programming" system the term having been coined by Dr. Kay himself. In Smalltalk _everything_ is an object, Integers, Strings, Execution Contexts, Processes. Lots of history. Also, its used in banks ;)
