Our hospital makes use of a "medical record number" which is the same
across all admissions. And also a "chart number" which changes from
admit to admit.

We have been approached about getting labels printed out for charts
upon admission.

Has this issue already been solved?
Does VistA have this same concept of medical record and chart numbers?

Can anyone give us details?

Thanks
Kevin

A different chart number on each admisson is diffent than I would have
expected. Is it perhaps like an admission number?

I think every facility calls it something a little different. But an
admission number would be the same thing.

We use the Patient SSN which we have modified to a 6 digit number as
our medical record number. We do not use or display a number for each
admission but the concept does exist in VistA. Loot at the VISIT file
(9000010), field VISIT ID (15001).

Usually, a patient has a single MRN and potentially multiple "billing" numbers for each occasion of service or encounter. There can be multiple active billing numbers say in the case of a patient being seen for a recurring workmans comp claim and also being admitted for an inpatient procedure.

Thanks everyone for the answers.

It this VISIT ID number auto-generated upon admission? Or is it an
open space that a number from a separate billing system (PMS) could be
stored in?

The documentation says it is set automatically through visit tracking.
But it is empty in the visits in our system.

I recall that VISTA does not use the Visit file for Inpatients; only
for Outpatient Encounters. Check the ever mysterious Patient Treatment
File (PTF). RPMS does use the Visit file for hospitalizations.
