Hardhats.org states that VistA HL7 Optimized (HLO) is "not widely used."

"There is a newer HL7 messaging system in VistA called 'HL7 Optimized (HLO)"=' --we won't be discussing that here as HLO is not widely used." --

https://www.hardhats.org/projects/New/SetUpHL7.html

Is this still accurate?

The last time I setup an HL7 interface is used the original HL7 package. Was wondering about the pros/cons of use the original HL7 package versus HLO?

What is the current conventional wisdom?

Thanks!

I have been told that the program model for HLO
Is simpler than that for the HL7 package.

They both handle the same HL7 protocol.

Initially it was stated HLO was faster.
Later I heard that HLO had to be adjusted to follow a closer adherence to the HL7 requirements, and after
these bugs were fixed, the two systems ran at about the same speed.

At CRH, we had to deal with a lot of different varieties of HL7, both sending and receiving. Joe Thurber blazed the trail to use Mirth Connect and it has proven to be a very flexible program to deal with a lot of issues. The ability to save a copy of an HL7 message and/or transform it using JavaScript code before forwarding it on from VistA or to VistA is a powerful tool in our arsenal.

Loyd Biddle was also a very helpful consultant in our journey.

Hello Douglas,

I didn't see your email. I think it went into my spam folder for whatever reason.

I wrote the article you cite; since it has been written, I have seen that a LOT of new VistA software is now using HLO. Most of it still uses HL7 classic, but HLO is not such a big outlier anymore.

Oh you asked another question: Was wondering about the pros/cons of use the original HL7 package versus HLO?

I have used both, and far prefer HLO. It's much easier to use and understand. But HL7 has a lot of real world usage, and HLO will probably still have bugs here and there for the next few years which will slowly get ironed out.

Thank you! I will dig into HLO a little more.

Loyd Bittle! I used to work with him years ago. Glad to hear that he is still in working in the VistA/Mirth realm.
