In our 2009 report, No Exit: The Expanding Use of Life Sentences in America, we reported that there were 1,755 juveniles serving life without parole. This difference is partly due to a change in our definition of juvenile between the two reports and partly due to more accurate reporting by the states regarding the class of LWOP prisoners who were under the age of 18 at the time of the offense.
The record for the obstacle course had stood for years when my class began training in 1977. The record seemed unbeatable, until one day, a student decided to go down the slide for life head first. Instead of swinging his body underneath the rope and inching his way down, he bravely mounted the TOP of the rope and thrust himself forward.
