Hi all,

Members of the comp.lang.clipper newsgroup have discovered that one of
the pillars of the Clipper/Harbour community passed away a little over a
year ago, on April 16, 2015. You can read about him here:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=145271194

Phil was one of the most important persons when the Harbour project was
originally started. The crew page at http://harbour.github.io/crew.html
lists him as "Harbour Manager" and "Keeper of Pieces and Parts".

Phil was also the keeper of the Oasis, the source code archive most of
us have visited many times over the last couple of decades.

The domain name the-oasis.net as well as harbour-project.org belonged to
Phil. Both have been auto-renewed this year, but the server is now off
line - which answers the question "Where did www.harbour-project.org go?"

A copy of The Oasis is however still available at the Wayback Machine:
http://web.archive.org/web/20160303203834/http://www.the-oasis.net/

Thank you, Phil, for everything you have done for the Clipper/Harbour
community for such a long time.

Hi Klas,

Phil was twice past president of Linux Enthusiasts and Professionals, so
the Orlando Linux community is also extremely sad about his passing.

There's a slight chance I might be able to put you in touch with a guy
who might have Oasis backups. Let me try.

Thanks,

Thanks. Or maybe we could get it from the Wayback Machine? But whatever
we do, we should have an OK from the family.

RIP Phil.

Klas, I remember many years ago Ross McKenzie of Valuesoft was delegated to re-arrange the Oasis by Phil.
Ross was an active ClipperHead from Australia.
Perhaps somebody could find him:

This is very sad :( Clipper/Harbour community, and myself
personally owe a tremendous amount to Phil, starting from taking
my little lame duck software called 'dst' under his wings, The Oasis,
keeping the spirit high on comp.lang.clipper. And perhaps most
importantly leading this very project from the earliest days for many
years, while providing and managing website, mailing lists (whatever
was needed), while always keeping up a friendly and positively
professional spirit.

Thank you Phil! RIP.

Yes, Ross is a valued friend from many discussions on comp.lang.clipper

He usually pops up there once or twice a year when Clipper users need
help recovering source code from binaries. I didn't know he was involved
with the Oasis, though. I'll keep him in mind. Thanks for the info.

Here is a pretty long thread I found that starts with The Oasis moving
to a new server 16 years ago and ends in I-a-not-quite-sure-what :-)

As a start, and as suggested by Andi, I have tried to reach out to Ross
McKenzie in an attempt to find out what he might know. I will report
back here how that develops.

Oasis has been the most important repository since the Clipper raising days
and I think that the Harbour community has a debt to Phil for his effective work in newsletter communication, web maintenance and sharing code, a bridge to the open source concept.
My thanks to him. I hope that Oasis will live forever, to remember our pioneering age.

R.I.P. Phil.

And thank you so much.

I have a copy of www.the-oasis.net, obtained via wget in April 2011. Will make it available in case it's needed. It's in a 77Mb tarball.

I'll never be able to give back as much as I have benefited from c.l.c & harbour, but if there is anything within my possibilities I'll be more than happy to start.

Hi António,

Thanks for  sharing it. At a glance, I noticed that the archive is missing css and script folders, so it's bad if it is mirrored as-is.
Let me see what I can do, or if anybody could help, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks again.

Indeed a very sad news....and coming to know about it so late! RIP!!

Long time back while looking for Clipper resources, discovered his site "Oasis" - was amazed to see the collection of Clipper source codes and tools. Though it was a late discovery for me, still it helped me in many ways. And through this site came to know about PHIL BARNETT, the person behind this great project. Never communicated with him, but always carried high respect for him for his such valuable contribution.

Thanks Klas Engwall for passing this news.

Some things are eternal.

The year is 2026, only now, I am aware Phil has passed away.

Thanks to Phil, I learnt the meaning of the word "outstanding" in portuguese language, when I suggested him a Clipper lib to use, circa 1994. I was a young student at the time, and the Internet was in it's infancy. I had never spoken to a foreigner before. This affected me deeply. Whenever I hear someone saying "outstanding" Phil came to my memory again.

Good to hear that Phil was a Linux addict, I did not know. I am using Linux for 27+ years as my primary operating system. Phil was always a smart and curious man. He always came up with good ideas overnight; I don't think he even slept while he was thinking about them. But, with the digital world, we are seeing our lives vanishing every day, and our knowledge is going lost.

The Phil's webpage was taken by some stupid gambling hacker, but the texts are there yet, to catch a bit of SEO. It's sad. But on the other side, I am very glad to see you make a real tribute to him.

Thank you guys for keeping his ideas.

I hope you all are in good health condition.

Cheers.
