There is an interesting story of a king. In his kingdom there existed a very strange rule. After ruling for five years, the king would be thrown into the thick jungle filled with wild animals on the other side of the river. This rule went on for decades. Many kings rules, had their wealth, following youthful fun and enjoyment for five years and as the years rolled by they became more and more depressed. When the last day of the five-year tenure arrived, the deeply depressed king would become an invalid. A ferryman ferried the kings to the other side of the river where there is wild forest. While they ruled, they forgot that they would be dispatched to the jungle after five years as a feast for the animals. They indulged in all worldly pleasures. This went on for several decades.

One day a young prince took over the administration of the kingdom. This king was different from the other kings. As the years and months went by and his tenure was coming to an end, he became more cheerful and excited. When the last year came, the excitement increased and on the last day he was in ecstasy. The reason! The king ruled well and at the same time enjoyed every bit of the kingship but with one difference. From the first day, he sent his engineers, architects, artists, technocrats and machinery to the other side of the river. He cleared the forest and constructed a beautiful palace there. By the end of the last day of his kingship, he was to be taken to the other side of the river by the ferryman. The ferryman was surprised to see the king’s excitement and he asked the king “do you know where you are going to and what is going to happen to you?” Yes, I do, said the king. The king then asked the ferryman “If I pay you double, will you operate from the opposite shore? The ferryman agreed. He had arranged almost everything on the other side. The only thing lacking was a ferryman. Now he had a permanent abode. He had not frittered away his reign indulging in pleasures. He had, instead, prepared a permanent abode.

Similarly in life, we are like the several kings who rule, enjoy the kingdom but in the end get thrown in the jungle. We are deluded by the pride of wealth, following and you and forget that the enjoyment is temporary. We forget that time loots away all these in a split second. But a philosopher is like the young king. He realizes and prepares a permanent abode. His focus of attention is always on the other shore, the shore of Divinity, as he rules in this world. The joy of life is enhanced as he continues in life. If your attention is only on these worldly pleasures, your pain will multiply.
