Food and Mood Connection

Some food can stimulate or tune your mood to happiness. To understand
how foods can make you happy, it's important to understand how the
brain regulates mood. The brain uses two types of neurotransmitters
as communication signals to communicate with the rest of your body and
to issue its commands. One is leading to unhappiness and the other is
reducing anxiety level and promotes calming influence. And the best
moods are found when there is a balance between these two types. Some
foods enrich with these chemicals and are called happy foods.
Typically, Serotonin is the neurotransmitter most linked to happiness
which can be richly found in spinach, turkey and bananas. Another two
neurotransmitters, Dopamine and norepinephrine, also help to promote
energy and alertness. Protein consumption causes these two
neurotransmitters to be released in the brain.

Why Dessert Makes Us Happy

The foods which are high in Carbohydrates cause the brain to release
endorphins and serotonin, which send pleasure signals throughout the
body.

Chocolate

The N-acylethanolamine group of chemicals found in chocolate
stimulates channels in the brain to release endorphins. Scientists at
the Neuroscience's Institute in California claim that a quick fix of
chocolate can: 'heighten sensitivity and produce euphoria'.
Happiness value: 5 out of 5

Ice-cream

Most varieties contain a good source of vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin
B12, calcium and protein from the milk - which stops you feeling
drowsy and low.
Happiness rating: 4 out of 5

Strawberries

These are rich in vitamin C which helps in the production of
endorphins and the absorption of iron. They are also a good source of
potassium, which helps in the generation of nerve impulses. The red
colour of strawberries is due to a flavonoid known as pecargonidin.
These also change our mood for the better.
Happiness value: 4 out of 5

Actually Serotonin - the main proponent of happiness brain chemistry.

This is the calming and happiness drug (natural) for your brain
You get these after consuming carbo.
So if you're on a 0 carb diet to lose weight and gets depressed instead (and end up eating more and doubly depressed) Guess and think again.
Sadly I've gone through all those diets haha and used to be double my size.

Was abt to post about brain chemistry and happiness
but consider this
Does your brain chemistry determine if you're happy ?
Or does your life determines if you're happy.

If you ask me - we need to live responsibly and healthily to provide the necessary environment for happiness to manifest.
Just eating to be happy (something i used to do alot!!) is not sustainable and would eventually make you very unhappy haha.
At the same time certain people may be rendered pathologically unable to be happy due to their brain chemistry.

In my opinion now that we understand our brain chemistry alot better we can manage and manipulate (To a certain extend) the chemistry of it but that certainly does not lead to happiness.

We can change our chemistry to support happiness (the ability to experience the happiness and chemical high)

However we should not and can't unnaturally alter our brain chemistry to attain happiness
for the best examples are illicit and illegal drugs - these gives instant happiness and high but does it give us happiness - that deserves a separate discussion and a lot more serious repercussions.

now that we've opened the can of worm of food , chemicals,  and drugs.
We should be very aware of happiness vs pleasure .

Pleasure(short term) is not much different from happiness (long term)
but don't confuse pleasure with happiness.

For pleasure its simple join me at one north happy hour 5pm-7pm for a beer and pizza (or 2 actually) and you'll get a high and pleasure but i can't guarantee you'll find happiness :P

I think food can conjure up memories, feelings and emotions. A happy
memorable eating experience is also one that utilises all five
senses.

I like eating well. By that, I mean I buy my produce from the farmer
or someone who knows the farmer. I cook my food with care and love.
And I eat my food with relish.

One of my happiest moments is eating cucumbers that I grew myself. I
lived in an apartment and could only grow vegetables out of pots. So
I selected a bush cucumber seed. Seeding and planting was not
difficult. But I was kept very busy fertilising the flowers (cucumber
plants produces male flowers that bloom first before the female
flowers bud) and later when the fruits were growing daily watering
(vegetable plants generally drink lots).

Finally, when I harvested my cucumbers, I sliced them for a sandwich.
It was heavenly. The fresh cucumbers were tasty, crunchy, and had
even with a light fragrance.

Sometimes I feel happy to have "toiled for the food" whether it is
growing it, baking it, or cooking it. Probably because I like to make
things, being able to create something via a process is in itself
rewarding. This can be making of a pesto sauce from fresh basil,
kneading dough for a pizza or bread, or stamping out butter cookies
from the cookie dough presser. Being able to enjoy the product of
labour is happiness in itself.

Vitamin D deficiency can cause fatigue and general depressive moods.
This is especially true in the winter time when more people tend to
suffer from seasonal effective disorder. A little exercise and
exposing yourself natural sunlight for 10 to 20 minutes a day can help
you get sufficient vitamin D to keep you happy.
