WHY AREN'T THERE MORE GOOD MANAGERS?

A manager is like a baker, explains Leonard Sandler in his new book
"Becoming an Extraordinary Manager," he must get the most out of the
ingredients he's given. "When the cake comes out wrong, it's seldom
the fault of the ingredients," writes Sandler. "It's probably the
fault of the baker. I'm not saying that the ingredients don't matter.
Get good ingredients. But it takes much more than that to be a great
baker or manager. They take ordinary ingredients and incredible things
happen." […]

BOUNCING BACK FROM REJECTION

Although rejection is a normal part of life, leaders in particular may
have trouble dealing with it. Sander Flaum's advice: "Rejection is
nothing more than a whistle stop along the line to your chosen
destination. Hear the train whistle blow and get aboard." Whenever you
feel discouraged, think of Abraham Lincoln. Before he became one of
our greatest presidents, he was defeated for the Illinois General
Assembly, U.S. Congress and Senate, and his party's vice presidential

LEADERSHIP LESSONS FROM THE "LEADER OF THE PACK"

We've all heard the expression, "It's a dog-eat-dog world," but it
turns out we can learn some valuable lessons about the true nature of
leadership from our four-footed friends. This true story of how a team
of sled dogs left behind in Antarctica worked together to stay alive
will inspire you and your team to support each other and to work
together to achieve common goals. […]

THE POWER OF BELIEF

As Henry Ford said: "Whether you think you can, or think you can't,
you're right." During his days as a door-to-door salesman, Sharif Khan
learned first-hand how belief in oneself and a positive attitude
contribute to a successful sales career. He writes: "I visualized
myself approaching prospects confidently and watching their faces
light up with smiles at the great opportunity I was offering. I saw
them signing contracts, handing me deposits, and warmly shaking my
hand. My sales increased and I was consistently #1 in my sales
crew.” […]

COACHING: WHAT REALLY WORKS

Don't be afraid of the coach. In the old days, coaching carried a bit
of a stigma, as it was often directed at problem employees. Now it's
more likely a sign that you're on the fast track, according to a new
AMA/Institute for Corporate Productivity global study. More good news:
coaching is indeed linked to improved performance, at both individual
and organizational levels. [...]

MANAGING BRAND YOU

What if you thought of yourself as a brand? Use the same million-
dollar marketing strategies as Starbucks, Victoria's Secret, and
Godiva to project your best qualities to the world. The authors of the

brand will allow you to:

▪ Identify your inner passions
▪ Stand out in the crowd
▪ Focus your energy on your top priorities
▪ Stop spending time doing things that do not excite you
▪ Achieve fulfillment, personal success, and, ultimately, happiness
