HANNAH FRANK NEWS AUGUST 2010 (please let me know if you want to come off this list)
My late aunt would have been 102 years old this month. We are delighted that the Hannah Frank Poetry Competition prize-giving will take place on the 102nd anniversary of her birth, 23 August, at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow. You’re all welcome to come and hear the winning poems – see below. To celebrate we are offering people the chance to acquire a rare Hannah Frank poster free. Keep reading to find out how. But first…
POETRY COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED
We received over 500 entries, which, the Poetry Society tells us, is a great result for a new competition. All winners in the 18 and under category have been notified and judging in the adult category has just been completed.
Poet David Kinloch, who judged the competition, said:
“The main challenge for the competitors was to create pieces of writing that could stand on their own as poems and yet still have a tangible connection with the work of the artist. The quality was high, particularly among the youngest groups of children. Hannah's art, which often reworks the images of folklore and fairy stories, inevitably appeals to young people who have not yet lost that early connection to these great communal sources of inspiration.” He added: “Each of the winning poems surprised me in its own particular way.”
See http://www.hannahfrank.org.uk/competition/index.htm
for information on the winning poems. At the moment only the titles of the poems and the town of origin of the winners are listed. Full details will be available on 23rd August. You are all most welcome to come to the prize presentation, which will take place at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, at 11 a.m. (arrivals at 1045 please). Please let me know if you’d like to join us.
POETRY BOOK PLANNED
We plan to publish some of the short-listed poems, together with the drawings which inspired them, on the Hannah Frank website and also hope to produce a book of 100 of our favourite poems later this year or in early 2011. We’ll keep you updated.
AUCTION HOUSE SUCCESS
A number of framed and signed Hannah Frank prints were sold at auction, via McTear’s, in Glasgow on Wednesday 14 July along with a sculpture, ‘Seated Figure’, from 1972. The prints went at prices between £130 and £330. After costs and commission we made more than £2,500 – all of which will go back into the Hannah Frank project and help towards production costs of the forthcoming book.
THE HIDDEN LANE GALLERY, GLASGOW
We are looking forward to a Hannah Frank exhibition at the breathtakingly beautifully restored and recently opened Hidden Lane Gallery, 1081 Argyle Street, Glasgow, beginning in the second week of September and running up until the end of October. What’s particularly exciting about this exhibition is that it includes five original Hannah Frank drawings that have resurfaced in a private collection in Norwich and were last seen by the public in the 1970s. (The owner found me through Ebay!) Some of the larger sculptures that have not been exhibited since 2006 will also be included in this show.
There will be an opportunity to bid on a small number of the original Hannah Frank drawings as well as purchase signed prints and canvas reproductions of Hannah Frank art. One or two bronze sculptures will also be up for sale at the exhibition. More information on this opportunity will be available on our website and the Hidden Lane Gallery website at the time of the exhibition.
The Hidden Lane Gallery is owned by former journalist and art lover, Joe Mulholland, who first saw – and fell in love with - my aunt’s art at the Frank family camera shop in the 1950s. Joe developed the Hidden Lane complex to provide workspace for artists and musicians, craftspeople and architects. The current connection came when he saw one of his tenants, Gordon McCracken at McCracken Framers, framing some Hannah Frank art, and Gordon put me in touch with him. LANCASTER EXHIBITION
I’m also delighted to report that there will be an exhibition of Hannah Frank prints in Lancaster at the Gregson Arts and Community Centre throughout December this year. My late aunt’s art was last shown at the Gregson in 2003 – the start of a very long international journey for her work. As part of the exhibition, on Saturday 11 December at 6.30 p.m. at the Gregson there will be a (free) showing of the dvd ‘Hannah Frank, The Spark Divine’ (followed by a Klezmer Music and Story-telling night!). The DVD was made by Sarah Thomas, award winning film maker, who was based in Lancaster at the time. (See below for special offer on the books and DVD).
SOCIETY OF EDITORS AND PROOFREADERS CONFERENCE
The prestigious SfEP is holding its 21st annual conference in Glasgow this year at the University of Strathclyde. We are thrilled that the society has chosen ‘O That Was A Flight Through The Air’, Hannah’s drawing from 1928, to use on the conference literature given to all delegates. The theme of the conference is ‘Succeeding Through Innovation’ and runs from 4 – 6 September 2010.
GLASGOW WOMEN’S LIBRARY AUCTION OF PLEASURES
Glasgow Women's Library is holding an 'Auction of Pleasures' on Friday 17 September at St Andrew's in the Square, Glasgow. Among the lots will be a signed print of Hannah’s 'Woman and Birds' from 1947. The auction evening is part of an event to raise funds for the Women’s Library refurbishment of their new home at the Mitchell Library. It’s going to be a “memorable, magical evening of good food, good company and entertainment for the best of causes. There will be the opportunity to bid on unique, innovative items that excite and please the senses”. A seat at the evening, including dinner, is £45 per person or £400 for a table (10 people).
