Dear Friends of Hannah Frank

I'm sorry to have to tell those of you who may not have heard, that my aunt Hannah Frank (Mrs Lionel Levy) passed away, peacefully, at Westacres Care Home, last Thursday 18th December.    My aunt doesn't seem to have had an illness in all her 100 years and she was comfortable to the end.

I have just returned home from the funeral, which took place on Sunday 21st December at Cathcart Jewish Cemetery.   It was attended by around 50 family, friends and fans including the Rt Hon Jim Murphy, MP, Secretary of State for Scotland.

Jewish funerals take place very soon after a death, and another service, the stonesetting, takes place some months later when the gravestone is erected. The date of this service, which will be a full memorial to Hannah Frank, will be announced next year.

Tributes to my aunt have appeared in the Herald, the Scottish Daily Mail, Evening Times and on the BBC.

I came home to find that a wonderful honour had been paid to my aunt: a letter had been posted to her the day before she died, from Sir Muir Russell, Principal of Glasgow University, offering her the award of Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters. I was just so, so, sorry that I hadn't been able to tell her about this; but so happy that it's happened at all.

Your thoughts and comments welcome: post them on the Centenary Guestbook on the Hannah Frank website http://www.hannahfrank.org.uk  .   Thank you for all the kind letters, emails and messages we have received up to now.

Donations, if desired, can be sent to my aunt's favourite charity, the Glasgow Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, c/o Jill Levine, 7B Netherton Ct, Ayr Rd, Glasgow G 77 6EN

Please note the web shop has been taken down from the site during the period of probate (though the books are still available on Amazon).

Sadly (but with the joy of knowing that my aunt had a fantastic, long and fulfilled life)

Fiona Frank
