HANNAH FRANK NEWS OCTOBER 2010
Much of this is a reminder of info which was in the last newsletter –
but also a SPECIAL OFFER ON PRINTS TILL END NOVEMBER ONLY, FOR
NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIBERS. Only a week left of the beautiful Glasgow
exhibition, and only a week to bid on four original Hannah Frank
drawings which their owner has had in his loft for thirty years and
has now put up for Silent Auction at the gallery. So please read on.
Dear all
I will be ‘at home’ for visitors in the Glasgow exhibition this
Tuesday 26th October at 4 p.m. and also on the last afternoon of the
exhibition. Hope to meet some of you there!
The Hannah Frank Drawings, Prints and Sculpture exhibition at the
Hidden Lane Gallery, 1081 Argyle St, Finneston, Glasgow, G3 8LZ, sets
out my aunt’s work better than any other exhibition I’ve seen – it’s
in the most beautiful gallery, with drawings and sculpture on two
floors and a wonderful seating area downstairs. One week left!
RARE CHANCE TO BID ON A HANNAH FRANK ORIGINAL DRAWING
There are around 34 original drawings and sketches in the exhibition,
plus around 25 sculptures – the largest show of Hannah Frank’s
sculptures for at least 20 years. Several of the bronzes are for
sale. Although most of the original drawings are currently only for
sale to public galleries, three original black and white drawings, an
unfinished drawing, and a set of two woodcuts have been placed in the
exhibition by a collector from Norwich who’s had them in his loft
since the 1970s and is now looking to sell them. Starting prices are
between £1500 and £2500.
Closing date for the Silent Auction is 4 p.m. on Saturday 30 October.
You can bid, in increments of £20, in person at the gallery, or by
phoning the gallery during gallery opening times (11 am - 5 pm,
Tuesday to Saturday).
The drawings are –
Hopeless Love 1929

and an iconic image which was originally a contents page for the
Glasgow University Magazine, then used for exhibition posters, and

POETRY WORKSHOP – HANNAH FRANK and the BORDER BALLADS
Apologies that the Schools Poetry workshop planned for this Tuesday
has been cancelled due to William Bonar’s being indisposed. Poet Marc
Sherland has stepped into William’s shoes to lead our final adult
poetry workshop, on Saturday 30th October, from 2 – 4 p.m. Marc will
be leading a workshop on ‘Hannah Frank and the Border Ballads’ on the
last afternoon of the exhibition. Marc is a creative writing tutor
who leads the Word Factory and Glasgow Writing Group and is also
secretary of the Scottish Association of Writers and the Ambassador
for the Federation of Writers (Scotland).
Marc said "Storytelling lies at the heart of art and this is certainly
true of Hannah Frank's work and that of folk poets who often used the
ballad form to tell their tales." The workshop will seek to link the
spiritual and supernatural in Hannah Frank's opus and in the Border
Ballads and will seek to provide a historical background of Border
Ballads, while encouraging participants to try their hand at writing
a narrative ballad inspired by Hannah’s drawings. Examples of
ballads put to music and an examination of key texts will feature as
part of the session.
No previous knowledge of the Border Ballads – or of writing poetry! -
is necessary, but you need to visit the exhibition prior to the
workshop to have a good look at Hannah Frank’s images – and/or examine
the work displayed on the gallery pages of the Hannah Frank website

INTERNATIONAL ART THEFT
We received details of an amazing story concerning one of Hannah’s
sculptures from a fan in Dundee. He writes:
“I purchased the bronze ‘Seated figure, 1972’ at the RGI show in 1995.
Hannah always wanted to know who had purchased her work, what I did
and so on. I met her at shows on several subsequent occasions and was
always impressed by the energy this tiny woman exuded.
The figure was stolen from my Glasgow flat the following year so I
visited Hannah at her home in First Avenue to arrange for another cast
to be produced as a replacement. Lionel was still alive then and they
were both very hospitable to me. She agreed to have another bronze
cast and I bought this from her. Some two years later the stolen
bronze was discovered in Singapore and was returned to me via a long
and tortuous journey by sea. As a consequence I now have two copies
of this bronze; the earlier one with a darker and more polished patina
is in our home near Dundee and the later one, with a more overall
green patina, is in Glasgow.”
