HANNAH FRANK NEWS – NOVEMBER 2012

It is a little while since our last newsletter. There has still been much going on in the world of Hannah Frank, though, not least…

ORIGINAL ‘GIRL AT WINDOW’ FOUND AT LAST

‘Girl at Window’, one of Hannah’s last black and white drawings (1952), which was untraced up to now has been discovered! It was bought at an auction house in Dorset this Summer by a newcomer to my aunt’s work. I don’t know how it got to the auction house…. We are particularly delighted to have found this picture because I had an address in London for the person who bought it in the 1970s. I wrote to the address some years ago, hoping to discover the picture there, but the letter went unanswered. And now it has resurfaced!

This just goes to prove that it is worth keeping an eye open as there are still some untraced Hannah Frank works out there. Let us know if you find one.

PRINTS FOR SALE

Three framed prints:  We have heard from someone whose father acquired three Hannah Frank signed prints in the 1950s - Wrap Thy Form, Woman and Trees, and Garden.  Wrap Thy Form and Garden sell from our website at £400, and Woman and Trees sells at £200 – all unframed price.  We are offering these signed, framed prints to newsletter subscribers on behalf of our reader at **£200 EACH**.  They can be seen in Glasgow if you would like to inspect prior to purchase – get back to me as soon as possible if you are interested in one of these prints, signed by my aunt in the 1950s and framed at that time.

Two limited edition mounted prints (unsigned): In the 1990s we had 50 only of ‘Sorcery’, ‘Sea Story’, ‘Red Flowers’ and ‘Two Figures’ printed, though my aunt was too infirm to sign many of them at the time.   Sorcery, Sea Story and Red Flowers have been sold out for some time; but I have just had a mounted copy of Sorcery and a mounted copy of Red Flowers returned to me from a gallery.  These are available to the first to get back to me, including postage within the UK for £65 each.

Hannah Frank prints and sets of notelets make fabulous Christmas and Chanukah presents – please order online and allow 2 weeks for delivery as I’m travelling rather a lot during December.  Call me prior to ordering if you have an urgent deadline for a gift and I’ll see what I can do!

NEW EXHIBITION – HANNAH FRANK IN LERWICK

Having celebrated with Hannah Frank’s art in the far north on the island of Yell, north of Shetland Mainland last August, we are now preparing for a very northerly exhibition of Hannah Frank's drawings, prints and sculpture at The Shetland Museum and Archives, Lerwick. The exhibition opens on Saturday 2 February and runs until Monday 4 March 2013.  Opening hours will be: Tues, Wed, Thurs and Sat, 10am - 4pm; Sun 2pm - 5pm. Shetland Museum, Lerwick, Shetland, Shetland Islands ZE1 0WP. Tel: 01595 695 057   http://www.shetland-museum.org.uk/

OPENING RECEPTION AND FILM SCREENING

Also in Lerwick there will be a special opening reception on Sunday, 3 February 2013, including a showing of the film ‘Hannah Frank -The Spark Divine’, made by award-winning film-maker Sarah Thomas.   This will take place at 3 p.m. and there will also be a talk – and a kosher buffet!  All welcome.

HANNAH FRANK HOLIDAYS!!

Would you like to join me in Shetland at the opening of the Hannah Frank exhibition?  As part of my ‘day job’ as Outreach and Project Worker for the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities, I’m going to be spending a few days in Shetland prior to the exhibition opening.  And I am very excited that the amazing festival of Up Helly Aa (look it up if it’s new to you!) takes place in Lerwick only four days before the exhibition opens.  So I’m planning to go over on the boat overnight from Aberdeen on Sunday 27th January and come back on the boat overnight on Sunday 3rd February.  Would you like to join me for the week?  (I may have some space in some self-catering accommodation, or you could try to find some other accommodation…) Get in touch if you’re interested!  It would be an ‘organise it yourself’ holiday but it would be FABULOUS to have some more of Hannah’s keen fans over there. And what a momentous week it will be!

EQUALS EXHIBITION A SUCCESS

This exhibition at Paisley Museum celebrated a century of female artistic creativity with an emphasis on artists associated with the Glasgow School of Art alongside recent acquisitions by contemporary artists to the Museum’s collection. This exhibition included a Hannah Frank sculpture, ‘Bird Woman’, and an original drawing, 'O Melancholy', (1928). The exhibition ran from 29 June to 21 October.

HANNAH FRANK IN CALIFORNIA

I have reported before in this newsletter about the wonderful Penny Richards and her Hannah Frank drawing lessons – well have a look at http://pennamite.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/hannahfrankslideshow.pdf and http://sbhandsonart.blogspot.co.uk/  - it’s all happening!

A SECOND DOCTOR FRANK….

Just over three years ago in June 2009 I was very proud, but somewhat sad, to collect a posthumous honorary doctorate at the University of Glasgow on behalf of my aunt, who had died six months earlier.  Last week I was very proud to collect my OWN doctorate, from the University of Strathclyde Scottish Oral History Centre!  The title of my thesis was  ‘“An outsider wherever I am?”  Transmission of Jewish identity through five generations of an extended Scottish Jewish family’.  The whole process was very connected to my late aunt because the family that I wrote about, the Hoppensteins, was the family of Lionel Levy, the family that Auntie Hannah married into in 1939.  Thanks to everyone who has stood by me through this long process….. (next stop, to publish the book – watch this space!... but let me know if you’d like to know more about the thesis)

Thanks for your support on the ever-changing Hannah Frank journey this year.  See you in Shetland?

(please let me know if you want to come off this list).

With all good wishes,

Fiona Frank
