HANNAH FRANK NEWS MAY 2012
SHETLAND WELCOMES HANNAH FRANK
As usual a chance encounter leads to a new adventure. I was doing a consultancy role in 2010 which involved the evaluation of intergenerational oral history projects all round Scotland. I was doing the interviews by phone, but the project in Shetland sounded very interesting and I’d always wanted to go there. So I took a little holiday and went to visit the Old Haa Museum on the island of Yell, Shetland when they were having their project celebration. A side coincidence happened when the one of the trustees mentioned to me that his sister was doing some research into exactly the same Scottish Jewish family that I had done my PhD on. This meant that I bumped into her again a couple of days ago at a Scottish Jewish Archives Centre open day…. she phoned her brother to say she’d met me… and because of that I have just had confirmation that there will be an exhibition of Hannah Frank drawings and sculpture at the Old Haa from 31 July to 19 August. The opening night will be Monday 30 July, at 7 p.m. All welcome!
The Old Haa Museum, Yell, Shetland. Opening hours Tues, Wed, Thur and Sat, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sun 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.
(I might be looking for a DRIVER to accompany me and the works from Glasgow to Shetland by the way. Might it be YOU? Let me know if you’re interested!……)
FANTASTIC OFFER ON PRINTS TO CELEBRATE IDEAL HOME SCOTLAND APPEARANCE
We're having a stall at the Ideal Home Exhibition Scotland which this year runs from 2nd to 5th June. At this stall, unsigned Hannah Frank prints will be just £10 each (usually £25) and we are offering signed prints at two for the price of one. This is a great opportunity to add to or start your collection and will hopefully create even more fans of her work.
I have located some unsigned copies of the light-filled drawings ‘Woman with Birds’ (1947) and ‘Girl at Window’ (1952), so this is a rare opportunity to buy these at £10. Other unsigned prints are ‘The Mocking Fairy’ (1931), a few last Dusty Answers (1930), Sun (1943), Night Forms (1932), and Flight (1939).
Find the Hannah Frank stall at no. S707 and meet our trusty stallwort stallholder Tim Street.

(If you can get to SHAWLANDS, GLASGOW at 10 a.m. on Friday 1st June, Tim and I would be most grateful for some help carrying boxes of cards, books, prints, etc, down 3 flights of stairs from my temporary Glasgow flat to the cars…. Can you help? There’s a free entry to the show or a couple of packets of Hannah Frank notelets in it for you…. And again, but in the opposite direction, on Tuesday 5th June, at around 8 p.m….. all offers of assistance gratefully received.)
GLASGOW UNIVERSITY VISITOR CENTRE TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE ON SIGNED PRINTS
Hannah Frank prints have now been on sale at Glasgow University for one year. For one month only, up until 13th June, which is the third anniversary of us picking up my aunt’s posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University, the Glasgow University Visitor Centre is selling all Hannah Frank prints at two for the price of one.
‘EQUALS’ AT PAISLEY MUSEUM AND ART GALLERIES
Paisley Museum and Art Galleries’ four month exhibition called ‘Equals’ starts in June. The Hannah Frank drawing 'Melancholy', 1928, and the sculpture ‘Woman with Bird’, 1955, are included.
The exhibition runs from 29 June until 21 October 2012. ‘Equals’ runs as a response to a previous exhibition at the gallery , Paisley’s Glasgow Boys’. ‘Equals’ celebrates a century of female artistic creativity, including new acquisitions for the permanent collection. There is an emphasis on artists associated with Glasgow School of Art, from trail-blazing Glasgow Girls, Olive Carleton Smyth and Stansmore Dean, through to their successors, such as Joan Eardley, and contemporary artist, Mary Redmond, whose newly commissioned work is shown here for the first time. And, of course, Hannah Frank.
Paisley Museum and Art Gallery, 60 High St, Paisley PA1 2BA
Opening hours Tuesday - Saturday (and public holidays) 11am - 4pm, Sunday 2pm - 5pm
