HANNAH FRANK ART NEWS APRIL 2012

Dear all
We have some really exciting news this month.  As usual, we just sit
quietly and the world has again been beating a path to our door and
telling us about things that Hannah Frank’s art has inspired.

HANNAH FRANK – GOING TO CALIFORNIA
Penny Richards, art teacher and Research Scholar at the University of
California, Los Angeles (UCLA) contacted us in March.  Her first email
contained the news that she had entered a lesson plan about Hannah
Frank and her work to a competitive selection process, and it had been
selected as a lesson to be taught in November 2012 to around 300
volunteer docents.  These senior teachers will go on to teach the
lesson to up to 7000 children in Palos Verdes, California as part of
the ‘Art at your Fingertips’ programme.   In April she got back to us
to say that the ‘Adventures in Art’ programme in the district of
Torrance has also chosen to have the Hannah Frank project in their
2012-13 programme – this is at least another 5000 children.  And there
are still two more districts that might choose this project!

Penny prepared a demonstration lesson 'Scottish Nights with Hannah
Frank', some beautiful  displays and lots of background material.
She said ‘I just want to share my excitement about Hannah Frank's work
with a new audience, and especially to see her work introduced to
children.’    She had initially come across my aunt's work in 2007
when she was writing a daily email about a woman born on that date
(for a small listserv called "Born on this Date," on yahoogroups, now
defunct). She'd been doing it since 2003 or 2004, so she was well past
the obvious famous people, and was enjoying digging around for more
unusual choices each day. She found mention of Hannah Frank's 99th
birthday, and her birthday wishes were included on the large birthday
card I gave to my aunt that year.   Around the same time, she got more
involved with the local art education program's design committee, and
started thinking what kind of projects she could propose--in particular,
they definitely needed more woman artists to be included in the lesson
plans under consideration.  She first proposed the project in 2009,
and it was considered in 2010 and 2011 too, but not chosen. This year,
after a few minor changes with the materials, three districts want it.

Penny's grandmother's family was Scottish by ancestry (
http://lettersfromsanquhar.blogspot.com/ ) and she felt drawn to a
Scottish artist.  She was in Scotland the week of the Poetry
Competition presentation in August 2010 at Kelvingrove Museum, and we
met briefly that day. So, through yet another chance encounter,
thousands of North American children – and their families and friends
– will have the opportunity to get to know Hannah Frank’s work.

Penny is happy to share her lesson with others outside California.
After she's delivered it in November we may host it on our website.
In the meantime if you'd like to see (and use) Penny's lesson please
email her directly on tur...@earthlink.net. And let us know where you
deliver it, so we can track this! (Penny suggests that schools taking
on the project buy a copy of 'Hannah Frank, A Glasgow Artist: Drawings
and Sculpture').

SCULPTURE AND PRINTS UP FOR AUCTION AT McTEAR’S
There is a chance to acquire a Hannah Frank sculpture at a reasonable
price at the next Scottish Contemporary Art auction at McTear’s
Auctioneers in Glasgow, where several  bronzes are up for auction on 1
May, 6 p.m. Viewing will be from 9am to 7pm on Monday, 30 April and
from 9am on Tuesday, 1 May. The bronzes up for auction are: ‘Seated
Figure’, 1989; ‘Singing Girl’, 1966, (exhibited at the Royal Glasgow
Institute in 1966 and 1967 and 1997); ‘Bird Woman’, 1969, (exhibited
at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1969 and in 1989); ‘Listening
Figure’, 1985 (Exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1985 and
1986.)  I have put three framed prints into the auction too, as there
is always a new audience for Hannah Frank’s work at these auctions.
Readers of this newsletter may be interested that a private seller has
included two more Hannah Frank prints in this auction.  These are
signed copies of ‘Sea Story’ and ‘Red Flowers’ – neither are available
from the Hannah Frank website now, as only 50 copies of each were ever
made.

For more info see www.mctears.co.uk – you can hear the auction on line
and bid online and by phone as well as in person.

PAISLEY MUSEUM AND ART GALLERIES
Paisley Museum and Art Galleries is to run a four month exhibition
called ‘Equals’ this year and has asked to include Hannah’s drawing
'Melancholy', 1928, and the sculpture ‘Woman with Bird’, 1955.

The exhibition runs from 29 June until 21 October 2012. ‘Equals’ runs
as a response to a previous exhibition at the gallery, ‘Paisley’s
Glasgow Boys’. ‘Equals’ celebrates a century of female artistic
creativity, including new acquisitions for the permanent collection.
There is an emphasis on artists associated with Glasgow School of Art,
from trail-blazing Glasgow Girls, Olive Carleton Smyth and Stansmore
Dean, through to their successors, such as Joan Eardley, and
contemporary artist, Mary Redmond, whose newly commissioned work is
shown here for the first time. And, of course, Hannah Frank.

COME DINE WITH HANNAH FRANK!
I had a surprise email from the Come Dine with me team last week.
They were filming in CHICHESTER  for a show which will be aired in
June, and one of their contestants had some artwork by Hannah Frank on
the walls.  They had to get in touch with the owner of the copyright
and to ensure that we had no objections to the art work being shown on
TV. Obviously I agreed to this.  Is it YOU? Please let us know!  I
hope you win and I hope we get a good view of the art on Friday 15th
June.

IDEAL HOME EXHIBITION
There will be a Hannah Frank stall at the Ideal Home exhibition at the
SECC, Glasgow, 2nd to 5th June 2012. See
http://www.idealhomeshowscotland.co.uk/    If you'd like a free ticket
for the show please let me know - I haven't had our allocation yet but
I can put you on a waiting list.  Special offers on notelets and
cards: two for the price of one prints; and a nice day out!

Have we missed anything?  Is there more going on?  Have you made a
friend through my aunt’s art? Has it inspired you to do something you
wouldn’t have otherwise done, or changed your life in some way?  Write
to us!

Best wishes
Fiona Frank
