Minimum version of Google Talk?

"The latest version of Google Talk" is also not very precise. It would be useful to know the minimum version we need for this to work. I have downloaded the latest version, but can not seem to get it to work. And I still get the red warning that it only works with the latest version...
My current version is
Google Talk plugin 2.8.7.6830
Google Talk plugin 2.8.7.6830
and this can be found under Settings in a hangout window.
