These are the steps I followed to get Hadoop install on my Windows8 Laptop. It takes 2-3 hours including the downloads for each step. Use latest software available.

1. Install Virtual Box software (Oracle/Sun) -- https://www.virtualbox.org/
2. Download Ubuntu/Linux Image -- http://virtualboxes.org/images/ubuntu/ (I decided to use a 32 bit install, though my machine is 64 bit).
3. Create a new Virtual Box to create the Ubuntu install
-- your Ubuntu install is ready to be used for any purpose

4. Use below blog to setup Hadoop on Ubuntu
http://mohsin-junaid.blogspot.com/2013/02/how-to-install-hadoop-104-on-ubuntu.html -- read this along with the Micheal's blog, if you get stuck at certain point.

If you face difficulty at any step, please reply on thread, I can try to pitch-in. Of course, Google search is best place to find any info. (Lot of help available for Ubuntu/Hadoop)

Cheers
~nirav

Hi Nirav,

Did you install release 0.23, 1.2 or 2.2 ? The latest release is 2.2 on http://mirror.symnds.com/software/Apache/hadoop/common/ but I am guessing Michael Noll's instructions work for 1.2.

Thanks
Bibhu
