HS codes for handloom products

Dear Members,

I would like to share with you one of the most significant
achievements from the work done by me, with cooperation and support
from many of you.

For long, we have been asking for HS classification for handloom
products. This classification has been notified. it took some time for
me to realise this, as the officials have not sent any direct
confirmation to me. Since 2005, I have been raising this issue on
several forums in New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Hyderabad.
I have written letters and articles on the same. Some Members of
Parliament had endorsed this demand through their channels.
Institutions such as UNCTAD and officials like Mr. G. K. Pillai had
also supported this.

I am sure this would open opportunities for handloom exporters to
widen their markets and benefit from the same would go out to handloom
sector. Genuine handloom products would have better opportunities.

Ofcourse, I do realise that more needs to be done. We need to reform
the HEPC, as an institution, and also its programmes in order to
strengthen the export process for handloom products. We need to work
on National Foreign Trade Policy 2009-14 and its provisions for
handloom sector. Before, we had put forward a number of suggestions
before the DGFT and other officials in this regard.

Importantly, we also need to study the present HS classification for
handloom products, and how such classification helps, or retards, the
promotion and identification of genuine handloom products.

I would request any one of you to take this as a project, and come up
with solutions. I would be happy to provide any support.
