Dear Members,
Government has constituted a Working Group on National Fibre Policy.
Given the importance of such a policy to handloom sector, it is
appalling to note that there is no representation for handloom
industry. As it is this is a 'jumbo' working group with 72 members.
Most of them are officials and top honchos of Indian textile industry.
With such a membership, one is not sure if there will be a proper
discussion on the various facets of fibre policy. The purpose of the
working group is brought into question not only by this huge number
and lack of balance in segmental representation, but also by the
chosen process of developing the policy. A tender notice was put out
inviting agencies to develop a fibre policy. Possibly, the contract is
already given. Estimatedly, this working group would put a stamp on
such a 'developed' policy. One is not sure if there would be any
further consultative process or discussion on this.
We will keep a watch on this process in the days to come. I would be
happy if any of you can provide information on the members and their
perspectives. I am including the list of members in "Files" section.
Thank you for your attention.
with best regards.
