Hello Barry, and thanks for taking the time to write.

Before staring a circle, I'd try to see how many currently exist in your area.  You'll probably be surprised at how many you will find, although you will mostly find out about them through word of mouth.  I'd start off by calling local music stores to see if they carry djembes or other world percussion instruments.  If they do, I can almost guarantee you that they will be able to point you in the right direction.  I would also try looking for and calling "New Age" type shops or hippie/head shops. If you know any Grateful Dead or Rusted Root fans, they might know what's happening.  Lastly, I'd look to see if you have any UU churches (Universal Unitarian) or Non-denominational churches in your area.  Pagan (non-Christian) churches often share a connection with the same scene.

If you want to start a circle of your own, you will need a space to make noise, and some instruments to share.  (You don't have to provide for everyone - most will have their own)  If you are interested in learning to facilitate a circle, check out these two books:  The Art & Heart of Drum Circles by Christine Stevens & Drum Circle Spirit.

Hopefully this will be enough to get you started.  If not, drop me a line and we'll see what else I can come up with.

Be well -
Stephanie
