Hello everyone,

As I was scrolling...and scrollling...and scrolllllling...and scrolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllling...and scrollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllling past replies in recent Handbell-L digests, it seemed this might be timely.

Please remember that replying to Handbell-L is a bit different than replying to regular e-mail. For most of us, the message you're replying to is already displayed by Google Groups, either in the web interface or in the digest e-mail, so it doesn't need to be included when you reply.  Unfortunately, most e-mail clients don't realize this and include the previous message with your reply.

SO PLEASE, when you click reply, delete everything below your new message before you start typing. In Gmail, this means you will have to press the little [...] button at the bottom of the compose window, so that you can see the previous text and delete it.

THIS IS EASY. When your cursor is in place and you're ready to type. Press CTRL-A (on a PC) to highlight everything and then press DELETE. Now type your wonderful message that will no longer be lost amongst the repeated repeats of repeating repeats.

When one of us forgets, the rest of us get messages that look like this, assuming you're the fourth person to reply (person D):

  Your reply here (D)
  I   The message you're replying (C)
II   The message you're replying to is replying to (B)
III   The message you're replying to is replying to is replying to (A)

And when EVERYONE forgets, we see all the replies for everyone repeated repeatedly, like this:

  Your reply here (D)
  I   The message you're replying to (C)
II   The message you're replying to is replying to (B)
III   The message you're replying to is replying to is replying to (A)
III   The message you're replying to is replying to (B)
IIII   The message you're replying to is replying to is replying to (A)
III   The message you're replying to is replying to is replying to (A)

Of course, no one's message is one line, so this gets REALLY long, REALLY fast.

Thank you in advance for clearing out the previous messages before you click SEND on your replies. (And please DO include relevant quotes when you reply. We just don't need entire copies of previous messages repeated ad nauseam.)

Ring on!
Daniel

Daniel,
I agree with trimming as much as possible before posting; it's just courtesy.

But are you really advocating "top-posting?"  That's long been considered bad netiquette.

No. I was advocating for cutting out all previous content except that which was precisely relevant to your reply, just as I have done here.

Ring on!

But some people trim too much, and we're left scratching our heads wondering to what exactly are they referring?  And are too lazy to go to the web site to see with which conversation their post is grouped.  So please don't crop everything!

That's fair. But because some people didn't crop ANYTHING, we are all rewarded by getting to see the Handbell-L post/subscribe/unsubscribe/digest information repeated repeatedly. For instance, in your most recent message:

To be fair, you only included one of these repeats. The second was added automatically when you sent the message. So we would have only needed to see one if you had cut out the previous ones.

Okay, I'm not here to bash people, only to call attention to an easily nullified annoyance that affects everyone on the list.

Moral of the story: Cut out the non-relevant stuff when you reply, keep the relevant stuff. Thank you!

Ring on!

Or the same thing we should be doing as handbell musicians: paying attention to the needs of our audience.

BTW: In many email clients if you highlight text then click reply only the text you highlighted will be in the reply.
