Good Morning:

Three members of my handbell choir, are planning to travel to the International Handbell Symposium in Jeju, South Korea in August 2104.
They have asked the church for permission to take the bells that they will ring at this Festival.
The church is understandably concerned about having their bells leave the country and has asked me to do some checking.

That all precautions will demonstrably be taken to ensure that the bells will be safely transported: the manufacturer/sale agent of the bells would normally provide guidance for safe transportation of these instruments of music; “

“That there would be no difficulty at airports, whether in Canada or Korea to transport the bells: the Canadian Air Transport Authority would communicate to you what has to be done in order that there would be no security problem at air terminals;

Since only an octave of the smaller bells are required, the Ringers had planned to take their own three bells in their suitcases, well wrapped, cushioned and in the middle of the case.

Since there is such wide experience within this group, have you ever packed your bells this way to travel?
Have you had any problems?
Has any had problems with the taking handbells in or out of South Korea?

I have already contacted the the ACTA and the Schulmerich Company but thought it would be well worth will to ask the Ringers would might actually travel this way.

Many thanks
Lynn

When I flew to Orlando in 2008, I was playing position 9 (E/F 6/7). I individually wrapped the eight bells needed in articles of clothing and put them in my carry-on luggage, just to make sure that if they were examined, I was present for the process. They did make me unpack them and unwrap all of them, but then I was permitted to continue. I was just afraid that if I packed them in my checked baggage that a careless TSA agent would damage them. Although it was a hassle to have them in my carry-on, it was worth it for my peace of mind.

YIKES! You're really planning ahead! How do you know we won't have teleportation figured out by 2104? Perhaps you should wait until say 2099 until you start figuring out how to transport those bells. :-D

Has anyone played Matthew Prins' fantastically challenging Ukrainian Bell Carol quartet? If so, would you be willing to share how you managed the transitions from mallets to ringing that happen so quickly in the upper parts? Any other tricks and tips to play this anywhere close to tempo would be appreciated as well!

TIA

I second the request! My group has been working on it for two years and given up both times when it came to crunch time.
