Dear Collective Wisdom known as Handbell-L,

A question I've had for a while, but never actually asked it.  I've heard the middle bells in a 5 octave set (C4-C6) referred to as the battery by directors.  Can anyone tell me why, and where this might have originated from?

Thanks in advance!

Andy

I believe the term "battery" as it refers the mid-range section of a
handbell ensemble was coined by -L administrator Rusty Sanders. He used it
similarly to the way the term is used to describe the battery on a
baseball team; the players who are central to the action.

Speaking of Rusty, I had a chance to see Rusty (and Laurie) in Bay View
last week. Rusty's recovering from another surgery for cancer and he looks
great. Laurie is taking exceptional care of him. It was great to see them
and their son Robbie. Oh yes, and their Volt!

ok - so it takes time for me to get around to reading and responding....

If it's not too late...

I was talking with Bob Ivey in Charlotte at the Charlotte Bronze
audition
and *he* asked about my use of "battery" in the audition process.
(For you young-uns - Bob was AGEHR President in 1971-1973 and is
one of our honorary life members)

I came back to my "L" archives to see what I'd read and just for
my interest I googled "battery define"
I found....

:-) I kinda like the second one :-) altho the bass is "heavier"
Happy Labor Day!
