I always thought it only went to G3. But I think near the end they went down to C3 through special order.

They did! It would be interesting to know how many sets are out there.

The only 5-octave set I've heard in person was owned by a community group
in Traverse City; I think they were associated with the Congregational
Church there. They used their PFs for every kind of music and they loved
the sound. But their bells were not always appreciated at mass rings.

Anyone from Michigan know if that group is still going?

St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle has a five-octave set of P&Fs, minus the A5 and B5 that went missing.

Actually, this is incorrect.  I have checked out both sets.  There is a set of G3-C7 Petit & Fritsen castings, handles and handguards with Malmark clappers (installed by Jake Malta).  The other set is C3-C8 P&Fs with the C6 casting missing it's handle, and 7 of the lower bells have been cracked but successfully repaired (not sure by whom, but I would guess either Jake Malta or Marlow Cowen and sound surprisingly good), there are also three springs broken, and pretty much all the bells in this set are loose to very loose.  These two sets belong to Historic First Presbyterian Church, Phoenix, and were used by John Payne (some of you might remember him as our National Festivals Chair and Area 11 Chair many, many years ago).  I have approximate figures from Joshua Huang, who apprecticed with Marlow Cowen, for repair of each set and approximate value of each set.  Please let me know privately if you are interested.  -- Doug Benton, Gold Canyon UMC, AZ

Nope...we just have 3 octaves of Petits. Well, 2 sets of 3, but
nothing outside of the 3 octave range.

3.5 oct.

They find me... it's a gift!

A lot of that info is on the Virtual Handbell Museum website.  The usual ways:  estate sales, antique shops, other collectors, word of mouth, etc.  I started collecting in the 1990s before most people were interested in them.  Some are donated, like the antique chimes (thank you, Michele Sharik!).

Hey!

Did you ever see the Choir College’s set? They were a gift to the Williamsons back in the 60ties from the manufacturer themselves!

I found them in a closet in the old Choral Activities office whenIi worked there as an undergraduate. I’m sure they’re pretty old ad broken by now; you could refurb them as a project!!!

Nope, news to me.  I wouldn't dare to ask... I'm sure they would want to keep them.

I do not refurb... I only do minor/easy repairs.
My P&Fs are in great condition.

I have a 5 chromatic set of P&Fs here in the UK down to C3, it is the only 5 octave set that I am aware of over here, I also have a three chromatic octave set down to C4.

I heard of a full 5 chromatic octaves in the US that had removed the original clappers, & replaced them with Malmark clappers, also I have heard of a set covering 5 octaves that were  4 chromatic octaves with the 5th lower octave diatonic down to C3 also in the US.

Yes, indeed, there is a 5-octave chromatic set of P&F handbells (C3-C8) with Malmark Clappers in G3-C7 (presumably installed by Jake Malta), and P&F clappers from C3-F#3, C#7-C8.  Unfortunately, the C5 and C6 bells are missing.  The G#3 casting was cracked, but succesfully repair (sounds very good). The entire set are in Malmark Cases.

Additionally, the same church (Historic First Presbyterian Church, Phoenix, AZ) also has a set of all P&F:  C3, D3, E3, F3, F#3, G3-C7.  However, the C7 is also missing - curious the missing bells are all C's - and the E3 is the casting only, no handle or clapper.  Several bells in this set have cracked castings that have been successfully repaired (Marlow Cowan?  Jake Malta?), that is, they sound very good!  They are: D3, E3, G3 and D#4.  There is also a 2nd (for this set) F4.  The C5 and C6 from this second set could be put in the P&F w/Malmark Clappers set to complete it, but those two bells do have P&F clappers.  There is a box with all the clapper parts taken out that is available as well.

Anyone looking for either bass 5th octave, or 4th & 5th octaves and or G3-C7 or C4-C7, email me privately and I can give you more information.  Yes, this church is anxious to sell these bells to someone who will used them.

There is another set of 3 octaves at a Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ, but they are not for sale.
