I have two young people playing the bell tree duet from McChesney's Symphonia on Hyfrydol for a wedding next month. We're playing on Malmarks, and we're using the plastic disks from Jeffers to separate the bells. I also have some thick wire type separators, also from Jeffers. We're fine with the higher bell tree, but for the lower bell tree, we cannot keep the castings from touching. Any suggestions? If we use Schulmerichs, would we have the same problem?

You can get acrylic block bell tree bell separators, specifically
designed (by Barb Brocker??) for large bells. Sonos has used them when
we've had to tree large bells and they work quite well.

Good luck!

I was also going to recommend those as well. When I was working on a handbell tree they were the only thing I used to stay the bells.

Jeffers has them at
http://www.handbellworld.com/equip/equipPiece.cfm?Piece=13353

I think they're far far far far far too expensive for what they are. (Although that's par for the course at Jeffers.) I've heard you can buy one set, then take them to a plastic cutting shop and use them as a template to get more cut at quite a savings.

I recommend these over the wire clips as they really lock everything in place much better.

I guess I'd better respond.  The acrylic ones to work very well.
Although I haven't gotten them on our website, we do sell all handbell tree related
products.  Our acrylic clips are $10.00 each.

I believe that the ones that Barb has are for even larger bells than the ones used on Kevin's Hyfrydol.  We followed Christine Anderson's suggested, and purchased clear B5 handbell guards from Malmark for C6 upward, and traded them with the hand guards that were originally on the handbells. I don't remember whether we had to go all the way up to C8, but if you are not having a problem with particular bells, then you don't have to replace those hand guards.  Once you have accomplished this task, you have no more worries about handbells slipping through the handle.

One other benefit of the B5 Malmark handbell guards is their diameter.  They are smaller than the ones that are originally created for size markers in clothing stores, but a just enough larger than the original guards on the smaller bells.  When you ring Kevin's Hyfrydol, it is very fast.  The Malmark guards don't get in the way of the fast moving mallets as much as the larger ones do.  Good luck!

When I first bought my handbells, I did this, and they do indeed work
very well for belltrees.

However, I very rarely shoulder damp, and I found these larger
handguards got in the way of my finger damping, especially in 4iH, so I
put the regular handguards back on.

YMMV.

One solution seems to create a new problem.  Hmmm. . .

Upsizing the handguards is an excellent idea for Malmarks. However, I
talked to Schulmerich about it when I ordered bells specifically for
bell tree work, and was told Schulmerich bells wouldn't fit in the
cases with the larger handguards. Good to know about the finger
damping problem, Michele, because I use these bells as duplicates
sometimes. Just as well I stayed with the standard handguards.

To answer Nancy T's question, yes, Schulmerich bells also require
separators. The bells below C5 are hard to fit in without the
castings touching, because they're so large in diameter. However, the
duet version of Symphonia on Hyfrydol goes down only to C5, so you
should be OK with some form of separation.

I don't remember seeing this mentioned yet, but Malmark and
Schulmerich bells use different sized acrylic block separators because
of the difference in handle width. The Malmark ones are shorter. I
use acrylic for bells G4 to Bb5, and the wire clips from C6 up. I
think that's Barb's recommendation. When you add acrylic clips to one
part of the strand, there's a domino effect and you may have to add
them other places you didn't have a problem before. You don't have
that problem with the wire clips, because they don't affect the
position of the casting relative to the rest of the bells in the
strand.

There was a discussion about this whole topic on Bell Tree-L. It
might be worth searching the archives for it. I vaguely remember
someone ingeniously solving the whole problem with thick rubber bands.

And congratulations to your two young ringers. What a great
opportunity!

Hope this helps -

We have not had any problem when using Schulmerichs. I have used a couple of the wire clips on the top bells of the upper tree and Ann uses nothing on the lower tree.
