I had the strangest experience in Seattle this week. I accepted a job to refurbish a set of handbells, but was shocked to open the cases to find bells I've never seen before. Some castings looked like Malmark, some looked like Whitechapel. There were some leather handguards, but most bells had rigid white plastic handles and handguards. The clapper heads were round, and clapper shafts were between 2 metal pieces with felt. there was nothing I could do except try to polish off the most horrible tarnish I've ever seen. I would like to find out how to take the bells apart, and how to fix the wobbly clappers rolling around on loose axles. I have no idea what tools are required, or how to fix the bells, but I would like to learn. Does anyone know an expert in working on bells like these?
