Where we place our bell tables is about to change. We're moving to what had been, long ago, a choir area with terraced seating. That means the tables have to go one level below where we humans stand.

What ways do you raise up tables? Purchased leg extenders? What brands do you like? Something made in-house? There are talented shop wizards in the church. Do you think one method is better (easier to use or more stable) than others?

Hymnals.

Easily available, sturdy, and completely safe. 🤣

At one point, we played a wedding in a location where the table legs on one side were down one step. I measured the legs, got some PVC piping that would slip over them and had it cut into appropriate sizes. If your table legs have a bend in them, you just let it go on the leg to the bend and add the addition height needed. And we use a different set permanently on the legs of newest of our tables which is slightly lower than the older ones. But you need to fit the width of the pipe to your table legs.

Hi,
We purchased out tables from Schulmerich.  They have several levels built in and can extend to various heights. We needed them to go over a communion rail.
Good luck.

Hi, Paul!

We had a similar situation with our handbell choir - needing to use two levels (steps) to level the tables.  We purchased black PPVC pipe and cut the appropriate lengths.  Additionally, we drilled holes in the pipes at different levels and passed a bolt through the holes to make the tables infinitely usable in many different configurations at different levels.  The table legs slipped down inside the PVC pipe and were stopped by the bolt at the appropriate levels.  We also labeled each piece with the length so that we could set up quickly, regardless of the length of pipe needed.

Good luck!

Hi Paul,

One church where I served they used a clever system of pvc pipe material and old tennis balls.   It was a unique and functional set up when we needed to set up in the choir loft or balcony.  That did not change the table legs which usually were on level ground.

There are 2 different ways to set up, but basically the table was set up with two legs in the pew with tennis balls cut to fit over the table leg to protect the wood pew.    The other two legs had pvc pipes with diameter large enough for the legs to just drop in.  The pipes were cut to the length needed to reach the floor.  Tennis balls were optional since the floor was concrete we weren’t worried about scratching.    Inexpensive and functional for special situations.

If you plan this to be permanent you might want something nicer than pvc and tennis balls.   No one could see our table legs so aesthetically it was a non issue.

Hope this makes sense!

Several years ago we purchased some bed risers from Amazon. They come in different sizes to accommodate the different level. We've used them in our choir loft (terraced seating) as well.

All excellent suggestions! If expense is not an impediment, go with leg extenders ( we used Malmark’s ); if you have a wood craftsman in your midst, and do not need “ multiple levels” on a single table, they can make dowels with screws to fit; we have two tables permanently fitted wit 4 extra inches of height ( really tall bass bell ringers) and 4 tables fitted with 2 extra inches of height.

We have used multiple hymnals also, but two people are needed for set up, otherwise it takes hours crawling around on your hands and knees.

If the situation applies only at “home”, enlist extra help and set it. Otherwise invest in leg extenders, and there are several types to choose from.

Good luck.

P.S. current situation, leg extenders from Malmark, but have used all mentioned above, plus specially designed boxes that accommodate our space.

There are 10 of these left.  They are heavy and shipping can be expensive.
