Hi L-ers,
I always read with interest the used handbells for sale because I get asked often as to where to look for/to sell and how much used bells can or should be sold. I have my own *person* views about the value of used handbells I and wondered if I am in line with anyone else or what your opinions/experiences are if you've bought or sold handbells.
Good luck to you, Scott. I hope you don't mind me using your post as a jumping off for discussion but that's what happens on the -L. :)
I believe that handbells will keep their original value but I don't believe they will appreciate in value. (I'm speaking of the 2 main handbell manufacturers currently in the US, not antique or rare bells.)
I advise people to reserach or ask the manufacturer what they paid for their bells and to begin by asking either the original selling price (if in exceptional condition) or 80% of the original price if the bells are in good condition and not in need of refurbishment. Although used handbells seem to be in demand, it seems to be a challenge to hook up the seller with someone who is looking and that will also affect the price. And, most of them don't look "exceptional" because they've been sitting around unused and uncared for most times.
Plus, a transfer of ownership from the original purchaser voids any manufacture warranty and this is a huge plus when buying new. Replacing parts, especially castings is expensive - another reason asking 2/3 of the current list price seems unrealistic to me. That's more than the bells originally cost - again, do you believe they will be worth more than the original price after 30 years? Not to me.
Again, this is my own personal opinion. I see people on Ebay asking prices comparative to new sets and buyers sometimes paying way more than I would for handbells and Choirchimes but some of that is the fact I know what I'm looking at in terms of age and condition.
Scott's bells show handles with the "Broadman" private label by Malmark so that gives a definite clue as to the age of the bells.
How does anyone else perceive the value of used handbells?
