Contact Forte Handbell Quartet in Colorado Springs.  I believe they have a website and a Facebook page.  They are the experts on this new technique.

New technique?

Don Allured did this in the 80ties. Even wrote a piece with it in. What's it called? Can't remember.

Minimalist composer Steve Reich was also using bowing technique on vibraphones since at least the 80s. Sounds a lot like the chimes! Cool!

Forté constructed a device to hold the chimes while bowing so one person can bow a complete melody.

I've bowed chimes when playing for my church's contemplative service. Awesome sound!

This is pretty cool, too:

Was it Paul Kinney or Kingbury who did experiments with bowing bells and chimes many years ago and reported back in the old -L ? (Back when it was run on AGEHR.org?)

I followed Jeannine’s suggestion and contacted Forte Handbell Quartet, and have already received
a reply from Megan explaining the technique plus a short video demonstrating it!

I also appreciate knowing Tim Waugh wrote a piece using bowed chimes.  Tim is our clinician for the

Hi all! We never claimed to invent the technique of bowing handchimes. What we did was Luke built custom racks, as Michèle said, to make it possible to play bowed chimes as a solo instrument. You can see what we do with it in action here: https://www.facebook.com/ForteHandbellQuartet/videos/1230356140308024/ (and closer up here: https://www.facebook.com/ForteHandbellQuartet/videos/1231802973496674/)

And we should keep using that terminology/notation since it's already
recognized in the larger musical world.

ps. trivia for the day: our "pluck" was once called a "flipzicato"!
(If I recall correctly, Don Allured's piece "With Mallets Aforethought"
was originally titled "Flipzicato Frolic".)

I just wonder is rosin is needed on the bow in order to make the sound and if it is, how you clean it off the bells.

Definitely use a cheap student bow - they are available in poor shape through a music teacher or for about $100 (Cdn, so maybe $75 US).

I used rosin when I did it. Otherwise the heirs jut slide over the bell/chime. I just wiped it off with a cloth. If it was more stubborn than that, I used a damp cloth followed by Aden one.

I recently got 5 new violin bows from EBay for $25 total!

Wow, I just looked at violins and bows on eBay. I shudder, as a teacher, of having to deal with some of that equipment, but they actually have bows for under $8 and under $12. Probably horrible on the violin but perfect for bowing saws and handbells.

... Or cymbals, or vibes, or guitars, anything similar. And since I didn't buy them to use on orchestral quality string instruments, I don't really care if they work on them or not. ;-)

I know some string players do not like to use their (very expensive) bows on percussion instruments (nor do I blame them!) but these were so low cost that if they get a bit mangled, it's not a problem.

WANT TO UPDATE OUR BELL TABLE COVERS!

We have 3-- 8' tables, and standard foam pads accordingly, for our 3 octave bell choir. Half the pads are covered with muslin. I now have new Navy "21 Wale" corduroy material to cover the pads. We have dark blue velveteen material that we have been using to put over the pads and tables. It does not match the navy corduroy. Now I want to cover the pads with the corduroy, and velcro the velveteen material to hang down the sides of each table.

I am afraid the velveteen material with be too heavy and will make the velcro sag on the pads.
What size velcro should we use (1", 2" or wider), where to get it? etc.? I understand there is a difference in quality of velcro.
Do we need to cover the rest of the foam pads with muslin also before covering them with the corduroy--will that make a difference in the sound?
I think if the velveteen stays at the top of the sides of the pads, the darker color on the top of the pad will be OK. I understand it will sound better with the corduroy cover on the pads.
Any helpful suggestions for sewing these?

Any suggestions for an alternative? I've also looked at restaurant clips for banquet tables but that does not seem to work.

We will appreciate any and all suggestions.
Thank you,
Nola Stucky, director

Hi Nola,

This question comes up regularly on the -L, so please feel free to browse the archives to see everyone's previous advice.

Every ensemble I've worked with has some sort of protective cover on their foams, usually a lightweight cotton cover.  Shadows of Bronze is using covers that I sewed myself, with a velcro closure in case I need to remove them for some reason. I made these the same color as our performance table covers so that rehearsal looks like performance, and "just in case" there's ever a need to use a foam without a tablecloth in performance.

Okay, now the "controversial" choice: What to use in performance?

Let's start with the material.  A lot of groups love corduroy material. I personally do not like it for several reasons:  It does not wear well over time, it can look strange from different angles and under different lights, its texture "zings" bells during fast changes, and it's darn heavy.  One of my groups uses polyester suiting as its material, which avoids all of these problems.  It's available in many colors, and we have it in black for concerts and red for church.  The black tablecloths have been in use for at least FORTY YEARS and still look fabulous.  (They looked so good that I copied them for my trio group and we have trouble telling the new ones from the old ones.)

Now let's talk about the configuration.  A lot of groups use topper that wraps over the foam with a coordinating skirt that either velcros to the topper or clips to the table.  I also do not care for this arrangement for different reasons:  It's complicated to set up, the velcro or clips loose their grip over time, velcro on the toppers can reduce the versatility of your setup if you have to change it, and it looks like a catered buffet table. (New recruiting line? "Try the bells, they're DELICIOUS!")

My preference is to simply use polyester suiting or similar for both the top and drape.  Suiting is generally available in 60-inch width.  We cut it into convenient lengths (usually 4 feet longer than the longest table length we want to cover with a continuous piece) and sew a 1-inch hem.  This provides 4 inches hanging over the back, 30 inches across the top, and 24 inches of flat drape down the sides and front.  If you like, you can round the front corners -- we don't since we never know exactly what setup we'll have and whether we'll need to layer cloths for a straightline arrangement.

Of course, this does not come to the floor, but we do not store equipment under the tables nor are we concerned with hiding the existence of our feet. We do not think it's distracting. (It would be more distracting if we didn't have feet.)  In fact, in my solo recitals, audience members have said it was interesting to see how I moved.  Campanile took this to an extreme and had no drape on their tables, which really cut down on the visual barrier between the audience and musicians.

You can see the 40-year old table cloths on the back row of this video: https://youtu.be/nf9LxE9-S3c.  For comparison, the front row is using my 6-year old cloths.

And here's a better-lit video showing one of my cloths as used in a solo performance: https://youtu.be/nzm2M6kmgOc  At 1:32, you can see the view from the back.

I hope that's helpful. If you need specific sewing recommendations for foam wrappers or the polyester tablecloths, please let me know.

Ring on!
Daniel
