Folks,

I'm coming out of lurk-dom to make a request.

I have just started a new position at a Presbyterian church in Atlanta, after having been at a Catholic parish for almost 20 years. The handbell choir at my previous post had 5 octaves of handbells and rang up to Level 4 music. The new choir has 3 octaves and rings occasionally at level 3.

There are several folks who are joining the new handbell choir with some musical experience, but zero experience with handbells, and another who is very uncertain about her musical ability. I would like to start with the basics with the newest and start from the most fundamental reading exercises.

At the Catholic church, I had available some reading exercises that focused on only the line and the space, and started with basic rhythms and rests. Obviously, those resources are no longer available to me.

Here is my dilemma: we rehearse on Sunday mornings and I offered to do a one-time basic ringing session with them. Well they want to do it tonight! So I don't have time to order any resource materials for this learning opportunity.

Similar to the ones that have been sent out for weaving exercises, does anyone have a PDF of the kind of line/space reading exercises I'm talking about? OR, if there is an online source, that would be terrific.

Thanks for your help!

I don't have time to isolate any exercises right now, but I have several online "prezis" that I use with handbell choir, and they have various exercises in them like you're looking for. You are welcome to copy them and adapt to your situation. Of course, you'd have to use them with a data projector, although I guess you can print them out? Not sure . . .

Hmm, I can read those PDF’s on one computer but not the other – missing a font. Sorry, I’m not sure how else to send them. These are Finale documents.

Thanks Linda for these exercises.

I know the person who asked cannot get this collection by tonight, but I always have a set of
"Developing Coordination Skills" by Michael Keller in my choirs' folders! They are very similar to your exercises Linda, and get progressively harder!

AGEHR publisher, AG 001

The only drawback is they are not reproducible, so you must buy a notebook for each folder.

But they are excellent teaching tools.
