As we experience more snow events this winter, letโs review a few important plow-related facts and safety reminders.
ย
Whether itโs a light dusting or more than a foot of snow, the Town of Hancock DPW is out there rain, snow, day, or night working to keep our roads safe for residents and visitors alike.

โข During winter storms, plows travel about 18 mph so roads can be cleared safely โข The Town maintains 50 miles of roadway across 6 plow routes โข Each route takes roughly 3.5 - 4ย hours to complete from start to finish โข Plowing is ongoing throughout winter weather events, as wind, drifting snow, and temperature changes can quickly undo progress.ย

โข Snowplows are large, heavy vehicles (often weighing up to 40,000 pounds) with limited visibility โข Stay at least 200 feet back (about 10 to 13 car lengths) โข Avoid pushing snow into the roadway when clearing driveways or sidewalks โข Tip: When clearing your driveway, pile snow on the right side, where plows naturally push snow. Do not pull up on a plow truck at an intersection.... chances are they have to back up to make another pass or turn around.ย
ย Snow tires are great in new england, AWD is great in new england but staying home during a snow event is best if you can.ย
Be patient. Every road will be plowed, just not all at once. Roads get done first, then municipal lots then the sidewalks.
