But there is still some risk in this new and rapidly growing market.
It's not difficult to find that the LED module price is in a huge
difference range. You can buy it from $24 / feet or lowest to $1 /
feet. We can see little of product has a price like in the market.
Because LED module is a new market and new technology. there is no
industry standard for manufacturer to follow. A junk LED module will
bring you more trouble than a neon tube, so it's very important for
signs guys to have ability to distinguish the quality of LED module
before they put into their channel letter and spend valued time to
install it.
Here is few key points for us to estimate the quality of LED module:
1. LEDs, good quality LED module usually useo LEDs with chip size
above 15x15 mils, but few manufacturer indicate their chip size in
their product document. TECLED Crystal 3 white LED modules use
10x23mils chip from the leader LEDs company like Cree or Osram.
2.PCB, Junk maker will use paper based PCB in their LED module,
because it is 5 times cheaper than fiber glass based PCB material.
Every main stream brands will choose fiber glass based PCB, as it's
more safe and have a beautiful surface effect. Also it has better heat
conduct performance for longer module life.
3. Wire, Thicker wire means lower resistance and better electrical
transform performance. Like all the brands LED modules, TECLED use 18
awg stranded wire (UL 1007 standard), it's also choosed by Sloan LED,
US LED and GE etc...Junk stuff from China use 22 awg wire even 24 awg.
It's very weak and easy burned out. Once the wire burned out, the
whole chain will be die out.
4. Plastic Housing, it's almost a industry standard to use fire
resistance ABS to make the LED modules plastic housing, some time will
use cast aluminum to make housing for high power LED module (Like 1w
power module). Cheap stuff will use recycled PCB or PE, it looks ugly
and easy to catch fire.
5. Safety Certificate: Always purchase LED modules with proper
certificate, UL and CSA is best for north America customer, it ensure
your project pass the city inspection. Do not trust the logos printed
on the junk modules, many China fox print UL or CSA on their product
even provide a file number, when you check it online you will find
that number belong to another company or just for PCB or Plastic part
