I'm a long-time lurker and staunch advocate of HR principles with my clinical practice. I have recently opened a group practice. Knowing that there are no non-12step, non-religious focused IOPs in the area, I began to search for options nationwide. Unfortunately, my search came up wanting.

Are there example IOPs that do not use 12step and do not have a religious focus? If so, I'm hoping to connect with the ones that exist so that I can ask questions and learn more about the challenges/successes that they have had, especially in locations that may not be as receptive to that model (I'm in Georgia).

This is exploratory and reading the amazing knowledge that is in this group, I am of the mind that there will be rewarding answers.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!

There’s one that I know of:  Practical Recovery (www.practicalrecovery.com). Founded by a leader in our field who you should know about if you don’t:  Tom Horvath.  I met him once.  Nice and totally lacking in pretense.

Yes for live IOP, Tom at Practical Recovery in San Diego is the best! There are a couple of online OP programs of course: IGNTD, Adi Jaffe; HAMS, for support for mainly alcohol (Ken Anderson); Life Process Program, Stanton Peele and Zach Rhodes. I'm sure I"m forgetting some but it's Friday eve!

Cheers!

I am running a harm reduction individualized IOP based on Tom's model at Freedom Institute in NYC. Glad to discuss.

These are fantastic responses! I've read Tom's name on this list and do remember practical recovery now. I'm going to do my due diligence and then I'll definitely be reaching out.

All the best,
Robert

Good Morning All

Im Neal C. Plant M.D. and I can’t help but resonate with this message.  I too am a long-time lurker and staunch advocate of HR principles who also happens to live in a region/locations that offers little to no options outside of  faith  based or 12 Steps. Absence only style of treatment.  Just like pretty much everywhere else, we really do have a full blown literal epidemic absolutely ravaging our cities and small towns and everywhere in between.  The carnage is everywhere.

Just in my general area, with the driving radius of only an hour, there is WELL over 1000 beds which stays mostly full of warm bodies either at capacity or almost at it year round, constantly recycling, rotating, and rearranging bodies with little to nothing to show for it.  The only other industry capable of competing with that kind of bed count is our prison system which has the same rotate, recycle, rearrange. routine is repeated over there as well.

Most all of those inmates will one day be patrolled out to the street.  Since they will all be on paper with mandatory meetings, and UA’s,and the like; always keeping the bureaucrats  at the good ol’ prison industrial complex and the Dept. of  Probation and Parole just a rolling along full steam ahead.  All of those parolees must attend so many meetings per week, propping up an industry that is already run as a monopoly.

When I looking into trying to offer or arrange to have other options available in my community I of course have had those who may not be as receptive to a HR model, and then there are those who are down right hostile to the idea of someone or something that could (and probably will) undermine the principles of the absence model threatening its monopoly held by the “addiction industry” aka (Big Buzz.).

The good news though, at least in my neck of the wood's, is actually two fold.  1) if/ when there were to be or  is a HR based option there is no rule or Law, forcing parolees into absence only, or faith based, and might I ad highly unsuccessful treatment model, so long as The Parole can remain sober and pass their UA’s. and 2) I am happy to report that there have been some SMART Recovery meetings becoming available in the large cities (this past year or so) it’s just a damn shame that their aren’t more options available for the rural counties which is the vast majority of the state.

I’m in Kentucky

I hope you find the information you’re looking for Robert. I commend you for the work you do.  Try to remember that somebody always has to be the first to do something otherwise nothing would ever change.

Be The Change!!!

Keep The Path!!!

Sincerely,
N.A.C.

And on a completely separate note, do you happen to offer your IOP program On zoom Doctor Tatarski?

Hello Robert,
I ran an IOP of this sort in Los Angeles with Dr. Kern as the clinical director a few years back. Would be glad to jump on and discuss some of the challenges if it helps.

Sincerely,

Adi

HAMS is actually a support group rather than an IOP. It's online and free https://hams.cc/
