Dear Colleague,

This talk by Dr. Wendy Miller will present a cutting edge, non-pathologizing perspective on Out of Control Sexual Behavior as an alternative to the traditional sex addiction model. Her treatment approach with individuals and couples integrates psychoanalytic and active, cognitive and behavioral sex therapy techniques and is consistent with Integrative Harm Reduction Psychotherapy.

If you attend in person, please say hello to me!

Dr. Wendy E. Miller is a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst and an AASECT certified sex therapist (CST) with over 35 years of experience working with individuals and couples. She has trained extensively in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy as well as with the Tavitock Center for Couple Relationships in London. Currently, Dr. Miller is on the faculty of The Women’s Therapy Centre Institute where she teaches classes on human sexuality. She also leads a monthly training group and supervises on cases involving sex addiction at The Center for Optimal Living, a premier harm reduction treatment and training center in NYC. She has taught at numerous institutes and given professional trainings on working with out of control sexual behavior and is currently running a long term weekly group for men struggling with feeling sexually out of control. Her interests are in the integration of psychoanalytic thinking and sex therapy. Her passion is helping people navigate the complicated task of being a sexually vibrant individual and couple.

OVERVIEW

Sex addiction receives enormous focus in the media and the media depictions impact how both the public as well as therapists understand sex addiction. However, there is a lack of deep understanding in the media about the complexity of human sexuality as well as the complexity of an individual’s interpersonal and intrapsychic world and how these interact and contribute to problems with out of control sexuality. Gaining a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of this problematic behavior will enable the therapists who attend this workshop to better address these issues with their clients.

This program will educate clinicians about how to address the problem when individuals reach out for help. Avoiding quickly labeling someone a sex addict but instead conducting a thorough and in-depth assessment that highlights numerous areas of concern is essential to good treatment. This program will also address how therapists can talk about these issues and invite sexuality in general into the treatment room in a manner that individuals and their partners can understand and engage with.
