Jessica Shapley MSW and I will be teach this in-person in April 17th for the Brooklyn Psychedelic Society.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) has come to prominence as an invaluable compliment to psychedelics therapy. It is one of the main modalities informing MAPS’ approach to MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD.

But the benefit of IFS is not limited to clinical contexts. For anyone preparing for psychedelic journeys, entering ceremonial containers, or even just wondering if psychedelics are right for them, IFS offers a tool for discernment and deeper inquiry into the intricacies of the self. It can open space for the sacred without magical thinking by helping you find a “sweet spot” between spiritual bypass and cynical skepticism.

Join us as Bill Gallagher, an IFS therapist with experience working with altered states, along with his wife Jessica Shapley, Clinical Social Worker and IFS therapist, demonstrate how to integrate IFS techniques with psychedelic work to foster inner healing, self-discovery, and personal growth.

We will explore:

  • The Foundations of IFS: Gain insight into how this therapeutic modality views the mind as a complex system of interacting parts, and the concept of Self and its 8 C's and 5 P's.
  • A Parts Map: Explore the concept of "parts" within your psyche and learn how to identify and understand the different aspects of your internal world.
  • Integration Techniques: Uncover practical and effective ways to integrate IFS techniques into your psychedelic practices.
  • Navigating Inner Conflicts: Gain tools to address and resolve inner conflicts that may arise during psychedelic experiences, promoting a more cohesive, internally consensual, and transformative journey.
  • Self-Compassion: Learn techniques to nurture a compassionate relationship with every part of your internal system.

Over the course of the evening, there will be time for Q+A and perhaps even an opportunity to participate in or witness a live IFS session! There will also be a chance to engage in discussions with like-minded individuals, sharing experiences, insights, and collective wisdom in a supportive and open-minded community.

Join us and discover the transformative potential that lies at the intersection of Internal Family Systems and psychedelics!

This event is part of BPS’ series, “Psychedelic Practices.” The series is designed to support skills and activities that have a complementary relationship with psychedelic journeys. Each class offers experiential learnings and "consciousness skills" with the aim of making psychedelic journeys safer, deeper, and more rewarding.
