Hi Ken and all,
Thanks for this review of the history of Shadel Hospital and its program.
Shadel supported my dissertation research by providing funding for me to fly from WSU in Pullman (its only campus back then) to run an RCT at their hospital back in '77-78. My RCT was on recovery of cognitive skills in abstinent alcoholics. It found a 50% improvement in neuropsych testing after 3 months of sobriety and was published in a peer reviewed journal.
Then I worked for Raleigh Hills Hospital at their Glendale CA facility in 1980 (for just a year). It did seem odd that they were admitting patients from outside their usual catchment area at the time. Little did I know that they were doing this for Medicare reimbursement which was illegal. This led to their eventual downfall and Raleigh Hills went under a few years later. I left after one year because I got a position on a rehab (physical medicine) unit in Albuquerque where I had my internship in 78-79. Commuting in LA was a royal pain even back then. The best thing that came out of that was that I met my future wife on a blind date and she was willing to relocate to Abq!
The downfall of Raleigh Hills was unfortunate because I did see the protocol being successful if/when patients developed a conditioned aversion to alcohol. And over time the aversion evolved to indifference yet continued abstinence.
Warmest regards,
Reid K Hester Ph.D.
